Iran Declares Mullets Illegal

Mary Thatcher
For once, American society and Iran agree on one thing: that the mullet hairstyle for men is horrendous and should be declared illegal. Unlike the United States, however, Iran has declared the hairstyle to be illegal, and that their morality police (AKA the Islamic ministry) has not only closed down barber shops offering the cut, but will also go after any male caught wearing the cut. That is pretty drastic, but at least they have a sense of neatness and dignity behind them. Who in their right mind wears mullets? A man who is bald is much sexier than one who wears the worst hairstyle known to humankind. Even today's country singers have all but disposed of the mullet in favor of something much shorter (or longer). Think Willie Nelson style braids. Or a Paul Davis ponytail. The deal is that Iran has come out with hairstyles that pass Hadith law which gives the men little freedom in dictating how they can wear their hair on their own. Acceptable haircuts include bangs, short spikes, and 1950's pompadours. Well, if an Iranian teenager wants to look like Elvis, he certainly can. He just can't wear a white sequined jumpsuit and wiggle his hips in the streets of Tehran.

Under Iranian Islamic law, long hair on men is banned but is considered normal on women, though women wear hijab to conceal their hair. Some younger women may try to arrange the headscarf so that a few hairs above the forehead remain visible. Of course, doing so means one risks getting caught by the morality police, which really is not worth it. But Iranian youth have rebelled against their Islamic controlled government long enough, ever since Ayatollah Khomeini took control back in 1979. It seems like the enthusiastic youth will have to find some other way to rebel against their nation's strict morality code. They can always come to America, where it is not illegal to wear such a hairstyle, but it is considered to be unfashionable and does not make one popular.

As a last resort, Iranian men who think the mullet is the cat's meow can always go to Canada and become a hockey team player, where that hairstyle is considered to be the rule and not the exception.

It's weird that a religion has to tell you how to cut your hair, or not cut it. So bizarre that some muslems have to keep their hair short, while others are not allowed to cut it at all. And as for women having to wear those horrible beakies... I am so pleased I am not religious, which doesn't mean I don't believe in God, it means I don't believe that I have to do as I am told by people who tell me it's God's will.
