Iran Election Protesters Change Technology : Rally Peaceful

Deborah Oakes, NPS
It is eerie as I search the internet for updates on Iran election protests from 5:00 AM, CST until now. Nothing new is coming through any of the usual sites. No Tweets, no YouTube videos uploaded, not much at Huffington Post or BBC. Even ABC's Jim Scuitto isn't tweeting on the Iran election protests.

It's scary because I know it is 6:15 PM in Iran and today another Iran election protest rally is scheduled. Although, last night's Tweets expressed fear of attending because it might be a trap. I also tried to post on Where's My Vote facebook page and the post disappeared. You have to get past filters the Iranian government set up to post.

Twitter changed their website at the same time the Iran Election protesters changed their tactics. Is this a coincidence?

Finally, I found what is going on. If you want to receive Iran Tweets, change your Tweet location to Tehran and time zone is GMT +3.30.

The Iranian government is setting up fake Twitter accounts and spreading disinformation. By all of us being Iranians, it makes it harder for them since hunt by location and timezones. Also, Do NOT publicize proxy IP's over twitter, and especially not using the #iranelection hashtag.

According to http://www.boingboing.net/2009/06/16/cyberwar-guide-for-i.html, Security forces are monitoring this hashtag, and the moment they identify a proxy IP they block it in Iran. If you are creating new proxies for Iranian bloggers, DM them to @stopAhmadi or @iran09 and they distribute discretely to bloggers in Iran.

Tweet Iran Election Protest Updates from Huffington Post, Monday evening:

Tear gas used inside girls dorm and motorbikes ridden into boys dorm deaths confirmed, 3 boys, 2 girls. Names released by Amnesty International.

Farsi website, Balatarin, carried unconfirmed report seven people killed in southern city of Shiraz following confrontations with riot police at local university.

German cameraman released, reported by German television.

12:17 AM ET -- Awe-inspiring courage. Another moment that brings tears to my eyes. With gun shots being fired around them, and men with rifles perched above yards away, the crowd stays and chants together, "Don't be scared, we're all together."

73-year-old shopkeeper said he walked more than six miles to the demonstration. 'I have only ever voted twice, once at the beginning of the revolution...and once for Mousavi,' he said. 'Today was wonderful. Tomorrow will be even better.'"

ABC's Jim Scuitto report just in, June 16, 7:51 AM, CST

He reports he has to keep walking as he talks so as not to attract attention of police. All foreign media ordered to leave the country. He said the day was peaceful. Violence reported from other areas of Iran. Tehran University students held a sit-in. A major demonstration planned this afternoon.

Tweet Just In: Rally Quiet, Peaceful, just what we wanted, June 16, 8:55 AM, CST

The Iran election protests continue. Let's declare July 4, 2009 Independence Day for Iran and help by emailing their Supreme Leader.

Just saw a Reuters video that said the Iranian government could not control all the cell phones sending to Twitter and YouTube. But they are trying. Scary stuff. Good reporting from you.
