Iran Election Protests Continue Monday as Tens of Thousands Defy Rally Ban

Iran Election Protests

Sunday evening Twitter accounts of the Iran election protests show videos of hundreds if not thousands of people chanting and walking Iran streets Monday evening. Reports of a raid on Tehran University tell of police raiding campus and fighting ensued.

Found at http://25khordad.wordpress.com/ : Police tore up dorms and photos of smashed computers and buildings appear online. Before leaving around 4 a.m., police took memory cards and computer software material and dozens of students were arrested.

"Many students are now leaving to go home to their families, they are scared," according to Akbar, who gave only one name out of fear. "But others are staying. The police and militia say they will be back and arrest any students they see." "I want to stay because they beat us and we won't retreat," he added.

Monday morning AP reports Iran's supreme leader ordered an investigation into the allegations of election fraud. He is Iran's most powerful figure, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. However, Twitter reports this is only for show because those on the review council are pro Ahmadinejad.

Twitter report Obama official: Huffington Post Live Blog:

A senior Obama administration official who did not want to be identified, explained president Obama is conscious of appearing not to favor any side in the election. Officials ruled out calling for a recount or a re-vote out of a concern for undermining the Iranian opposition.

The official said it is important to have a policy toward Iran that advances the administration's desire for liberalization and human rights in Iran, not one that merely vented American outrage at Ahmadinejad.

Understandably, Obama could hurt Iran resistance by showing his support.

Interestingly, although the EU says it accepts Ahmadinejad's victory, Germany does not. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said "Germany views events in Iran following presidential election with great concern." He also condemned 'brutal actions' against demonstrators which he says "are unacceptable."

Tweets also came through with videos of demonstrations in Ardabil which is Mousavi's home province.

Video of Iran election demonstrators quietly walking streets towards a rally the government declared illegal. It is tens of thousands of people walking with their arms in the air, holding hands, holding posters of Mousavi and quietly making their way to a rally in Tehran. Mousavi has asked demonstrators for peaceful, non-violent protests. Twitter reports he hasn't been seen for 48 hours.
