Named Omid (meaning 'Hope' in Persian), the Iranians describe Omid as a data-processing satellite for research and telecommunications. See the Iranian FARS News Agency media release, "Iran Send First Home-Made Satellite to Orbit" [SIC], at http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.php?nn=8711151856 for details, propaganda http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Propaganda , and media spin.
Today, February 4, 2009, in less than 10 minutes, at about 8:35 AM, the Iranian satellite launched yesterday, will fly through the sky over the Florida Panhandle, between Pensacola, FL and Tallahassee, FL, about 100 miles north of my house. (See Real Time Satellite Tracking at http://www.n2yo.com/passes/?s=33506&tz=GMT-05:00 and Florida time in the context of GMT at http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/usa/florida.)
If this makes you feel safe and secure, you've seen Mary Poppins once too often or maybe you're watching MSNBC too much. What I want to know is when that battery of SM-3 satellite killer missiles are being deployed in my neighborhood, off the Gulf Coast.
Omid will be coming to your neighborhood soon. Are you ready?

Post a CommentFollow-up: According to the Political Desk of the Tehran Times, the Omid, entered the atmosphere
over South America on or about May 2, 2009. It had been in orbit about three months,
being launched February 2, 2009. (According to the U.S. Strategic Command, Omid reentered
the atmosphere on April 25th.)
excellent report here!
I was reading how easy it would be for them to develop this into a chemical bomb launcher or worse. Yeah - your closing line.
Your closing lines sum it up well.
Your sentence "If this makes you feel safe and secure, you've seen Mary Poppins once too often..." says it all. Terrific report, Michael!
Michael..we voted Omid into Washington..and should all embrace Iran's technology..there are no clenched fists in that part of the world..and as the Iranians declare their nuclear endeavors are to provide heat and light for the people..I'm sure their tv reception will improve with the new sattelite. What's the Persian word for "change".....
