Iriomote Cat: Rare Japanese Exotic Cat

Elisia Yun
The Iriomote cat is a rare Japanese exotic cat which originated from Japan. Their name derives from the fact that they come from a place known as Iriomotejima in Japan. They are smaller than the average exotic pet, and definitely a very interesting breed of cat; one thing for sure though they are an endangered species of cat, and we should work towards making sure that they do not become extinct.

There actually is not too much known about this species of exotic cat as there have not been too many active studies on them. This is because observing and studying these cats is not an easy task - especially when there are only a limited view around. It can become quite difficult to observe them without disturbing them or interfering with their daily activities. In fact, this species of cat was not even discovered until 1964.

The Iriomote Cat is an averaged size exotic cat when compared to others of its category. It does, however, have smaller legs than most and a stout tail. They usually are as long as 2 feet, and will weigh up to 12 pounds. While they have a stout-looking tail, their tail is actually about a third of the size of its body. They have nice beautiful coats which are a rich brown color; the texture of their coats is a nice silky feel. They have jet-black ears and are decorated with white spots all over. They also have other patterns displayed on their body.

The Iriomote Cat has a vast variety in their diet. They will feast on Flying Fox, a vast number of beetles, and even seafood. Probably because of the food possibilities like the garbage lying around, the Iriomote Cat is generally attracted to human civilization and life, and will venture towards the city where they would be able to find a home; however, this often seems to be more of a bad experience to them, and may actually cause more harm than good.

The population numbers of the Iriomote Cat as remained stable since 1980; however, there are still only around 100 individuals in existence. They experience habitat destruction by increasing human population and also they have to complete with other wild cats on the island. They may quite possibility be the missing link between some of the existing cat species nowadays. Tourist trade on the island also brings more people and construction which affects their habitat.
