Iris

Corey Hanke
Walking through a field

on a cool, spring day

I saw a single Iris

along the way

This single Iris was blooming

though it was hard to see

because winters chill

had just started to cede

I kneeled down to pick it

as a familiar fragrance

gracefully permeated my senses

I was reminded of a love

the subtle smell of perfume

memories raced through my head

starting to consume

Her picture in my mind

started stirring my heart

as I felt my soul

slowly fall apart

A single Iris in this bountiful field

just as she was a single iris to me

I could have no other.

no one would be, could be

any better than she.

I picked the Iris

paused as I stood

a feeling, an emotion

I misunderstood

I slowly turned

Iris in hand

and there she was

as if by some divine plan.

An eternity passed

or so it seemed

when I extended the Iris

for her to see

In a soft tone, I spoke to her

and this is what I said

I knew it was your favorite

I could never forget

no matter how many years

passed since last we met

I dream of you nightly

I think of you fondly

and if ever a love were true

my love for you is proof.

She stood, silent by my words

reached for the Iris I had plucked

and held it close to her heart

as I turned and walked away.

I walked for what seemed years

till a voice echoed around me

I turned once again

as she ran to me

She leapt in my arms

and I held her close

like the single Iris

she loved the most.
