Ironing: How to Starch Jeans

Ever forgot to drop your cute jeans off at the dry cleaners the week before an event to have them starched? Have you ever been disappointed after starching a pair of jeans at home? There are a number of simple steps that anyone can follow to guarantee that after starching their jeans that the jeans will be extremely crisp. The steps that everyone should follow when pressing a pair of jeans are simple, fast and effective.

Before starting to iron a pair of jeans, the jeans should be clean. Ideally, the jeans should be hang-dried or dried on a clothesline. This will make the process of starching the jeans easier in a couple of ways and will also make the results of pressing your jeans better. When the jeans dry in this manner they will already be stiffer and the jeans should not be washed with fabric softener, so that they will remain stiffer once starched.

The first step in actually starching a pair of jeans is to spray the whole pair of jeans evenly with starch. Starch that can be bought at the store works well or there are numerous good recipes for homemade starch that can be found online. The jeans should be allowed to dry until they are dry to the touch. This can take about ten to fifteen minutes. It is important that the jeans are dry before someone starts to iron them because otherwise the starch may flack off the jeans. The iron should also be set on a high setting and the steam setting on the iron should be set to off. It is important that the steam on the iron is turned off because otherwise the jeans will become moist and will not be stiffened but simply ironed.

A person can iron their jeans in two ways. If a person wants their jeans to have a crease then they should simply hold the inside and outside seem of the legs of the jeans together. Lay the jeans out so that the crease will be placed in the desired location and slowly run the iron over the jeans. If a person does not want to have a crease in their jeans then they can simply be ironed by laying the legs of the jeans out flat.

The process of ironing the jeans can be repeated multiple times, until the jeans are to the desired stiffness. It should be noted that heavy starch in the can, no matter how many times it is applied will never make jeans the same level of stiffness as a dry cleaners heavy starch.
