Past research has already demonstrated yoga's ability to decrease blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Now in a small United States study it may also provide remarked outcomes on irregular heartbeats.

The study lead by Dr. Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy, associated professor of medicine at the University of Kansas Hospital, had followed 49 patients who suffered with an irregular heart rhythm condition.

During the first three months of the study, patients maintained their regular exercise routine. For the second three months patients participated in yoga sessions three times weekly at 45 minutes each session. The sessions had included breathing exercises, yoga postures, mediation and relaxation. They also were encouraged to practice at home with an educational DVD. All patients never had yoga.

Throughout the trail heart monitors were used to measure episodes of irregular heartbeats. The patients also filled out a short survey to evaluate their levels of anxiety, depression and overall life quality.

Yoga demonstrated positive results

Yoga on average had decreased episodes of irregular heartbeats in half. It also had shown to greatly decrease depression and anxiety scores along with showing improvement in physical functioning, general health, energy, social functioning and mental health.

According to Dr. Lakkireddy, yoga had demonstrated to having a major impact on aiding a patients heartbeat and improving overall quality of life.

This condition is found in 2.2 million Americans, according to the American Heart Association. These patients are usually given warfarin, a blood thinning medication to be taken every day in order to decrease the risk of things such as clots in which in the long run will prevent strokes.

Dr. Lakkireddy, states considering the low cost of yoga and its benefits, people should consider yoga for heart rhythm problems. However, he is cautioning that larger studies are still required and patients should still continue their current treatments. Yoga is just a supplement therapy to the things they are currently doing.

Due to the raising cost of medications many people do seek alternative therapies in order to help with their overall care. Alternative therapies are far less expensive and do not come with side effects as medications can cause. However, as with any alternative therapy you should check with your health care practitioner first.

Other alternative therapies that may aide in decrease of anxiety, stress and high blood pressure which in the long run decreases irregular heartbeats include:

Chiropractic

Chiropractic care is known for its spinal adjustments. The central nervous system controls all functions of the body. This central nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves. When a misalignment or a malfunction in the spine occurs it can irritate the spinal nerves that can cause impairments in the bodies internal organs. Therefore it is not uncommon that things such as headaches, shortness of breath and irregular heartbeats occur. When the chiropractor corrects the subluxations it improves the symptoms. Chiropractic has already been demonstrated to decrease stress, anxiety and high blood pressure.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture treatments can also aide in irregular heartbeats. When treatments are applied to the meridians, it stimulates the pathway to send a signal to the brain which activates different different areas some include pain and others the cardiovascular system. It has helped numerous patients in decreasing irregular heartbeats.
