Government departments are notoriously late in adapting to new technology and modernization. Part of that attitude may be justified by their concern for security. Government cannot entrust their information and activities to unproven or nascent technologies.

But our Internal Revenue Service (IRS) doesn't appear to follow that conservative approach. They want to be more customer-friendly than their fellow departments.

This time they have made a conscious effort to woo the young "hitek" taxpayer.

Taxman recently unveiled IRS2Go smartphone application for taxpayers. This program lets taxpayers inquire about the status of their tax refund. Also, they can get helpful tax information and tips.

How to use the IRS2Goapp?

1. Getting Your Refund Status

First, the taxpayer will enter the Social Security number. Don't worry, IRS says the information you enter is masked and encrypted for security purposes.
Next, you have to put in the filing status used on the tax return.
Last piece of information to be entered is the amount of the refund you calculated on the tax return.

For those who filed electronically, the refund status is usually available within 72 hours after the arrival of the confirmation e-mail from IRS, acknowledging the receipt of the return.

For those who filed paper tax returns, it may take up to three to four weeks before the refund status becomes known.

2. Getting Tax Info, Tips and Updates

Taxpayers can subscribe to this service by signing up with their e-mail address. Then, they can receive this information automatically.

That may include daily tax tips and reminders of tax dates. Tax tips are aimed at helping with tax planning and preparation.

No, IRS won't bother you throughout the year. Daily mailings happen only during the tax season. After that it will be periodic updates only.

How to get the app?

Apple i phone users can download the free IRS2Go application from the Apple App Store.

Android users can download it from the Android Marketplace.

IRS intends to keep up with the latest updates as smartphone technology evolves further.

Not surprising, as they already have a presence on Twitter and You Tube!
