COMMENTARY | Just four short years ago, the American people were discussing whether or not the country was ready for a minority President. After the election produced President Obama as the winner, that question was answered. Now, with the Presidential race heating up, the new question on the tip of every American tongue is whether or not we are ready for a Mormon President in Mitt Romney. Despite Romney's flip flopping attitude on topics like abortion and insults to the working class, it may be his religion that prevents him from being elected the next President of the United States.
How Are Mormons Viewed by the American People?
The Mormon Church has received a lot of attention regarding gay rights, including several documentaries on the church's involvement with the overturn of Prop 8 in California, so the gay vote is out of the question for Romney.
There is a history of negativity toward interracial marriages, though the "new" Mormon Church claims interracial marriage is acceptable today. It is thought that the church's position on interracial marriage focuses more on the fact that marriage is hard and interracial marriage is harder, so the church does not necessarily oppose interracial marriage; rather, the church supports making the best choice so the marriage does not fail. Unless an interracial couple is Mormon, I doubt Mitt Romney will get the interracial vote.
Some previous Mormons attest to blatant racism occurring in the teachings of the Mormon Church. According to one report, children of the church were taught that "mixing your blood with the seed of cain (blacks) was [punishable by]…death by stoning." I doubt Mitt Romney will be earning the African-American vote.
Who's Left to Vote for Mitt Romney?
There are between four and seven million Mormons living in the United States with most estimates falling around six million. Of those six million people many are bound to know someone who's gay, in an interracial relationship or African-American. Still more must be friends with people who support a woman's right to choose and despise the fact that the Mormon Church has immeasurable influential power over government, as was the case with Prop 8. How do these people vote for Mitt Romney when the very religion he professes promotes hatred, segregation and racism? No American with any sense of humanity can honestly vote for a Presidential candidate of the Mormon faith based on the history and actions of the Mormon Church. Moreover, would the American people be voting for Mitt Romney or would the Mormon Church with its limitless money, iron-clad anti-Christian values and strong-armed political influence be earning the spot as the next President of the United States?

Post a CommentThis is one of the most ignorant, hateful, misinformed articles I have ever read. Not only is Miss Summer's information incorrect and riddled with outright lies in some parts, it misses the point. I have never voted or not voted for a presidential candidate; it all comes down to who will be the best, hardest working, and diligent leader and representative of our country, regardless of what church they are affiliated with. I am appalled that this article was posted. Summer and Yahoo! should be ashamed of themselves.
So, are we voting for the Pastor of the United States or the President of the United States?
I've never left comments before, not even Mormon. But wow, this is the most hateful article I've ever read. Surprised Yahoo would allow stories like this to boost there stats.
Well, it sure is good to know that we have good upstanding citizens that know that Mitt Romney is unfit to be President because he is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. I think I remember reading in the Constitution and President Lincoln elaborating on the Qualifications for running for President, besides being a natural born citizen, that anyone espousing to being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints would be automatically disqualified, especially if Ms Summer Banks, keeper of all that is good and right and qualified to make judgements for all those of lesser intelligence than her superior judgement and intellect, should be immediately disqualified.... Ms Banks thank you for your intuition and superior intelligence and qualifications to interpit the Constitution and it's Amendments and that all men are and were never to be percieved and being created equal in the eye's of their creator, since you know how and who the creator Love's and Favor's in your equally narrow view that God has for all his Creations.... Thank you for stupping down to favor us with your Grace and please keep up the Good Work You are Doing !!!!!
Good false info. I've been a journalist for over 15 years, and I can tell you Summer is not a real one. Summer is full of ignorance, hate, prejudice, and bias. Anyone who believes any of her "points" here should be ashamed. Please, start a petition for Yahoo to raise the bar on their "news" stories. I can promise you, this did not have to pass in front of an editor's eyes before it was published on the website.
This woman has no business commenting on politics, she's obviously misinformed about the LDS church.
This is supposedly a Yahoo NEWS article?
So you're saying out of all the people in the US, only about 6 million Mormons (minus the ones who know gay people) are going to vote for Romney? That sounds like an inflammatory remark to me. He has the lead in at least half of the United States. Obviously, this is more than 6 million.
This is an irresponsible show of journalism quoting bad sources with a serious personal bias.
I suggest to all who read this (including you, Summer) to ask a Mormon friend what the facts REALLY are. This article 1) doesn't focus on Romney, but his religious preference. It uses the facade of politics to bash a religion and 2) uses false information. Just because it's on the web doesn't make it a good source.
good info
