The great schism of the church in 1054 probably has a greater impact on the true body of Christ than the Protestant Reformation. The schism separated the brothers and sisters in Christ who really should have held together united by common understanding of what it meant to be part of a Catholic and Apostolic community... God has given all the protection the believer in the subjects of the true import by means of the creeds and apostolic succession.
It is not that the church led is not lead by real men who error in judgment but, we can certainly see some correction of error as promise of our Lord to society of Christ. The Holy Spirit was at work in the Church from the very beginning. This meeting of the apostles and presbyters described in the book of Act 15:4 - 9 had been invited to address the relationship of Jews and Gentiles in the church.
Christians Jews believed that Gentiles believers had to submit to the law as well as their faith in Jesus. Paul, Barnabas, and others were sent to present the case. Paul warned of the gravity of the crisis, took Titus, a Greek native, as a living specimen of what the spirit of God could accomplish without circumcision. The decision of this council was significant (Acts 15:28 - 29).
This council decided that the law, which had been impossible for Jews, should not be required of Gentiles. They need not be circumcised, before conversion. The main point was incarnation, reflected the Gospel in the minds of people. The sacrifice of Christ had formed a new covenant with God's people and the old rules and regulations no longer applied. There was some precedent to giving more freedom to those who wished to become part of the Church. It was the basis of reform that allowed Christian missionaries to allow some leeway in practice, this lead to converts from very different cultures.
This more theologically liberal approach was adopted by St, Patrick, the English captured and sold him into slavery in Ireland who escaped but has gone to the priest. It had enormous impact. In the 5th century, he converted thousands to Celtic Christianity
The true date for the separation between the Eastern Church (Constantinople) and the Western Church (Rome) is 1054. Theologians like Tertullian of Carthage and Clement of Alexandria represented the views of two distinct but complementary religious expressions. The rivalry had developed in areas between the Slavic missionaries of the Latin West and the Byzantine which was considered the Orthodox territory. Other issues that have promoted conflict were practices associated cult and church discipline.
The crusades, religious wars by Christians to save the Holy Land, seemed to have sealed the schism. The Fourth Crusade (1204) was diverted to attack and loot Constantinople during which Orthodox Christians were murdered and desecrated churches and icons by western Christians. The Islam was not permanently checked as a threat to Eastern Christians.
The history of reform and renaissance in true Anglicanism begins July 14 1833.When the Reverend John Keble gave the Assize sermon before an assembly at the university church of St Mary, Oxford. He took the opportunity to attack the state interference in the Church 's business He called the clergy of England to act on "National Apostasy " to reaffirm the dignity of their church, now under such a threat. Keble and his school friends, Professor Edward Bouverie Pusey, John Henry Newman, and others, soon began the publication of parts designed to shake up the complacency of clergy and to affirm a vision of what it means to be true the Church of England They were called "Tractarians " accordingly, but they are also called "Puseyites " .The Puseyites has restored the name the "Anglo-Catholicism" for it was a name that reflected the core of their reform of which unit they represented.
They knew, the Church of England could claim to be part of one Holy Catholic Church. Newman seeking to combat the state's power over the church understood the true separate Christian authority the Church of England was spiritually entitled too. . Its God-given authority was built on the writings and polity of imparted to it by the Church Fathers from most ancient times. This had served to convince Newman to adopt a position of high status for bishops, priests, and sacraments of the church. The importance of the Eucharist was restored to the body of Christ.
Seeing the inspiration of God, many believers adopted. Newman 's knowledge of the restoration of the church for British believers.. Unfortunately for the Anglican Church, Newman's frustration with the church sent him back to the Roman Church. He left some young and energetic priests who remained true to reform.
Like all the periods of reform in the church that restoration of the Church of England was not without pain. Believers; in slum tenements to the House of Parliament Anglo-Catholic were ridiculed for their restored Catholic belief. Putrid vegetables were thrown on priests while they preached the truth to their flocks from the pulpit.
Anglo-Catholicism as a counter cultural movement, one that has supported practices that were symbolic slights to some of the core values of the dominant culture of middle class. The members of the urban poor, women, and youth of both sexes; fully supported catholic reform. Several of these brothers and sisters in Christ have felt abandoned by the Church. They had been blessed by the return of orthodox practice to the Church They had been betrayed by the Protestant reform supported by many of the schools, upper classes and powerful public officials. Many of these believers as a group we would understand today as being part of oppressed groups. As soon as the church Anglo-Catholic church had reformed the lay people searched their hearts for the truth .These people were much like the Jesus himself .They were so eager to bring in to the Church; those that others had falsely considered unworthy of the grace and love of God.
