Is the Bible Truly the Word of God?

Pat Lunsford
Those who say the Bible can't be believed haven't done their homework. Archeology has confirmed the historicity of the Bible time and time again. Some of the parchments and fragments which date back to antiquity compare almost word for word to our current Scriptures. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away." (Matt. 24:25)

With everything the Bible has been through it is absolutely amazing that it has made it this far with so few errors. No other religious book in the world can make this claim. Despite its incredible accuracy, the fulfilled prophecies alone should be enough to convince even the worst skeptic.

Several hundred years before Jesus was born it was prophesied that a Son from the line of King David would be born in a town called Bethlehem. It was also prophesied that He would be called Emanuel (God with us) and would be hated and rejected. Moreover, it was prophesied that He would be beaten and crucified.

Then there's the virgin birth, the clothes that He would be wrapped in, and His ride into Jerusalem on a donkey, the piercing of His side, His words on the cross and on and on it goes. Jesus fulfilled at least 300 prophecies. What are the odds? Considering the facts associated with the Bible it's nearly inconceivable that anyone would doubt its message.

What about all of the different translations? Some scholars believed the King James needed to be brought up to date as our language has changed radically from when the Bible was first translated into English. Take for instance Philippians 1:27: "Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel..."

The word "conversation" means "lifestyle" which is only one of many Old English words that has a different meaning to us today. Also, the Greek language can be difficult to translate so different scholars interpret certain words differently. When these different translations are used together, it gives the reader a fuller scope of the intended meaning. Some translations are simply easier to read such as the New Living Translation which reads more like a commentary.

However, the King James translation is still the most trusted version of the Bible by both clergy and layman alike. Parallel Bibles are becoming very popular today and most of them combine the King James with another translation. Nevertheless, it appears as though the King James version is here to stay as it is still the most favored translation.

Those who attack the validity of the Holy Bible are soon brought to shame by those who know the facts surrounding it. There's no other book like it in the entire world. Throughout history there has been a number of professionals who set out to discredit the Bible only to end up converting to its message, namely, salvation through Jesus Christ.

Therefore, the Bible can absolutely be believed. It has been tried and tested more than any other book ever written. Anyone who says the Bible cannot be believed is demonstrating their own ignorance.
