Is Big Oil Destroying America?

Larry Crosby

How bad really is the gas prices hurting America?

As a contractorI am on the road A lot. In the years prior to 2000 I would spend about twenty to thirty dollars dollars a week on gas. This amount varies depending on where you live. Some states have no laws against additives in the gas that makes your gas milage worse. In Las Vegas Nevadaat times I would get a tank of gas that was amazing my horse power doubled.I no time I was going ninety miles an hour on the freeway. After adjusting my gas pedal pressure to get back down to the speed limit I found I could go at least five days without filling up again. Sometimes I would get eight days between fillups. This happened several times in the eighteen months that I lived there. The rumor was the gas came from Canada. Canada only allows a few additives. Without sucessI have tried every additive known to man to try to get the same results. The gas companies additives cannot be overcome. I now live in Omaha Nebraska and my gas milage is dismal.I get a Little better than half the gas milage than I used to in St Louis Missouri. So the impactof the gas prices is far greater in some areas than others.

For most of us in construction our weekly gas bill has gone from thirty dollars a week to around a hundred and twenty dollars a week. For someone making ten dollars an hour their pay has just dropped to seven dollars an hour. Actually less than that since I am not figuring taxes or any other deductions. Prior to the gas gouging a weeks gas would be three hours a week from your paycheck. Did you know that more than sixty percent of all Americans make less than ten dollars an hour? So we are looking at a huge number of americans that are seriously affected by these extreamly high prices. Of course some would say take the bus. Some cities do not even have a bus service. Most cities have cut back on thier busroutes. In some jobs Busses are not an option.Try loading 200 eight foot two by fours onto a bus.

For many years I made my living trading stocks. In those days prior to 2000 the large oil companies made about $750,000.00 dollars a quarter. If they would make a million dollars a quarter they would break out the champane glasses. The price of gas fluctuated from about eighty five cents to one dollar twenty five cents a gallon. Now with the oil companies making about ten billion dollars a quarter (Exxons latest quote) gas is around four dollars a gallon. American workers have had thier pay slashed as a result. New clothes for the children? not now we must buy gas. Groceries for the week? lets not eat as much we need gas for the car. This is the daily problem most Americans now face. Since well over half of the people in this country are facing this problem of price gouging the impact is huge.

All Industries are hurting from the impact of the fear Americans now face. The fear of having no money to buy the essentials. Drilling more local oil wells won't help. The oil companies will just get more profits. Releasing oil reserves.Since there is no shortage of oil driving up the price of gas that won't work either. Then what are we to do? The oil companies obviously do not care about this country so they will not change thier ways. Congress is to weak to stand up to big oil or any large corporation. So there is no hope there. What can we do? Get rid of all the congressmen? There is an election comming up. If we give them all the boot then maybe we the people of this country can finally get some justice. Granted Removing all of them is no garantee. Probably do little actual good but it sure would feel good to get rid of those that care nothing for the people of this country. And I do mean all the poloticians no matter what party they are from.
