Is Bottled Water Better Than Tap Water

Are American's Getting Ripped Off by Water Bottling Companies?

Is bottled water better than tap water? According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation, consumption of bottled water in the U.S. has doubled over the past 10 years. Representatives of the bottled water industry state it is not unusual for the source for company's bottled water to have come from municipal sources; in the majority of cases, the water is purified before minerals are added for taste.

Some companies in the bottled water business make claims that sound good. Ice Mountain Natural Spring Waters states it is, "pure as the driven snow". However, have you looked at snow lately.

Consumers' believe bottled water is safer and healthier than tap despite supporting information. Is it worth the difference? Do American's understand that ounce per ounce bottled water is more expensive than gasoline? Is there an understanding among the public that the water that they are drinking out of the bottle may be the same as what comes out of their tap? Is this another corporate rip off?

The The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit public health advocacy group, studied 188 brands of bottled water. They found that only two brands listed their water sources, and how the water was treated on the label. Jane Houlihan, a researcher at EWG stated, "Consumers spend 1,900 times more for bottled water than for tap water, yet they rarely know basic information about exactly what's in their water bottle". According to Houlihan, 25 percent of bottled waters are just "tap water in a bottle."

The federal government is not certain if American's are not being ripped off. July 8, 2009, lawmakers on Capital Hill were discussing purity and safety standards of bottled water.

During the hearing Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Michigan, held a bottle of Dasani and noted the water source is not noted on the label. Perhaps picking up Dasani was purposeful by Stupak. Could it be he remembers the Dasani water scandal? In 2004, Coco-Cola admitted that the United Kingdom's version of Dasani's water was from the municipal water supply.

Although the labels do not require the bottler to tell of the source of the water, whether or how the water was treated and if chemicals were added to the water; they are required to note if minerals were added per governmental regulations.

It's amazing how these companies can convince millions of people to buy bottled water. I've always taken mine directly from the tap.

great information. Up here in Canada they have banned certain types of plastics, including ANYTHING containing BPA. Our bottles have breakdown numbers on the bottom to tell you how much toxic plastic you just drank in your water. One thing you should note is that you should never refill those water bottles, especially with warm or hot water, the bottles break down very quickly. Great article!
