Is Your Boy Ball Tapping? Has He Been Injured by Ball Tapping?

Should Ball Tapping Be Illegal?

Sherry Tomfeld
Listen up parents! There's a game boys are playing. It's called ball tapping. Sounds innocent and harmless enough, doesn't it? The first thing to know is that ball tapping is dangerous to your boys. Boys will walk up and hit another boy in the groin. Not tap. Hit. Ball tapping is causing injuries to boy's testicles.

A Minnesota boy, David, has had a testicle removed because of an incident of ball tapping. A boy came up to David and did the ball tapping and later that night the boy was in excruciating pain. He woke his mother, she took him to the hospital and the surgeon removed the injured testicle. Common sense will tell you that ball tapping is more than a tap to the groin.

Why are boys doing this? One goal seems to be making the Internet on YouTube. Yeah, they hit someone in the groin and record the ball tapping for posterity and kicks on YouTube. They want to capture the "moment" and the look on the poor boy's face. Some use it as a way to bully or intimidate.

David was 14. He was ball tapped by a peer. A 14 year old is old enough to know better but it seems that anything goes these days. It gets worse. A 5 year old boy was operated on in Indiana for injuries received in a ball tapping.

Parents need to sit their boys down and explain the dangers of ball tapping. Explain to the boys that ball tapping can rupture a testicle. It's a serious operation for these young boys. Ball tapping can lead to urethra injuries.

Symptoms can be severe pain, trouble urinating or blood in the urine. This can lead to infertility.

David is not the only boy to be seriously injured from the "game" of ball tapping. His surgeon said he has already treated 3-4 other boys this year. This so-called game is getting out of control. What are parents to do? What are schools doing?

Ball tapping in Indiana was really rampant. One superintendent saw an incident of ball tapping and immediately called the police. The boy was charged with assault. Should he have been charged? If the boy had hit the other boy in the face he would have been charged.

Ball tapping is a serious "fad" that is causing injuries to many boys across the U.S. The ball tapping game started a few years ago but has not faded out. Ball tapping is on the rise, so are the injuries. Talking to your boys about ball tapping is a MUST.

Mark, you make great points and the reason this article was written was to draw attention (hopefully to parents) that a problem exists and to talk to their kids about it. Thank you for your input, I hope it makes people think.

If I made a movie that showcased a female getting kicked in the groin by a man, would you laugh? What if it was by another woman? Still not funny right? How about if my wife got hit in the chest by my son with a baseball bat and I caught it on tape, do you think that would make it on Americas Funniest Videos? No, I'd probably be considered a pervert and possibly be accused of some sort of sexual harassment crime. And don’t even get me started on grown women kicking men in the groin simply because they pissed her off. If I punched my wife in the face because she flirted with the pool boy, I’d be thrown in jail. But when it happens to a man I hear “he deserved it.” BS!! Violence is not an acceptable solution to disagreements no matter your age or gender and should not be tolerated, ESPECIALLY when that violence is deliberately inflicted on the weakest part of a persons body. Wake up!!! (coming down from my soapbox now)…

Aren't we all ignoring the real problem here? These kids are doing this because they think this is funny!! Well big surprise there, WE are giving them the impression that it is funny, they aren't coming up with it on their own. We as adults set the example for all these kids. For as long as I can remember, every sit-com on TV, and every comedy on the big screen has showcased men or boys being hit in the groin. And it hasn't stopped. Just the other day I saw a preview for a new movie (I think Ben Stiller was the star) where the actor was trying to cross a fallen tree, slipped and fell straddling the tree. And we are all supposed to laugh at this. Wake up people!! The kids think it's funny because most of you think it is funny. Me? I don't think it's very funny, in fact I'm starting to get a little pissed off when I see this and see grown adults laughing about it.
