Is the BP Oil Spill in the Bible?

Only If the Tribulation is Just Around the Corner

Brooke Lorren
The Bible has a lot to say about the seven-year period that will occur right before Jesus comes back to Earth. Many believe that we are in the last days, and that the seven-year period, also known as the Great Tribulation, is just around the corner. Some people think that the BP oil spill is a fulfillment of Revelation 8:8-9, which talks about a great mountain being thrown into the sea, the sea becoming red like blood, and the death of a third of the creatures in the ocean. Although the BP oil spill could potentially be in the Bible, there would have to be a lot of other things occurring in the near future to make this a fulfillment of prophecy.

The book of Revelation is primarily set up in chronological order. Although there are a few parenthetical chapters that visit Heaven, the judgements are in order. The first judgements are the seal judgements, which begin in chapter 6. After the seal judgements, the trumpet judgements will occur. The destruction of a third of the sea is the second trumpet judgement. For the BP oil spill to be the second trumpet judgement, many other events would have to occur before the oil spreads so far that a third of the sea is killed from the oil spill.

Many Christians believe that before the judgements would begin, the rapture will occur. Although the rapture is not specifically mentioned by name, there are a couple of verses that make many believe that all Christians will be taken up to Heaven in Revelation 4:1. The seal judgements occur shortly afterwards.

The first four seals bring about what is commonly known as the four horsemen of the apocalypse. These will bring a conquering ruler, war, famine, and death. The fifth seal only affects the inhabitants of heaven. After the sixth seal is broken, there will be a mighty earthquake, and everyone will be full of fear. The Bible does not say what happens after the seventh seal, but it indicates that everyone in Heaven will be silent for a half hour.

Before the second trumpet judgement can sound, the first one will be sounded: the first trumpet judgement will result in a third part of all the trees and green grass being burned up. After a third part of the green grass is burned up, then a third of the seas can be destroyed.

For the BP oil spill to be the second trumpet judgement of Revelation 8:8-9, a lot of things will have to happen in the very near future. This also assumes that the oil spill will not be stopped, that the oil will not be contained, and that any cleanup efforts will not work. My conclusion is that the BP oil spill is not in the Bible, although it is a tragic situation. There are too many things that would have to happen in the near future for it to be likely that this event is a part of prophecy.

  • The BP oil spill resembles a prophecy in Revelation 8:8-9.
  • Revelation 8:8-9 is the second trumpet judgement, which occurs after seven seal judgements.
  • For the BP oil spill to be the second seal judgement, the Great Tribulation has to start soon.
The third temple will be built in the last days. Although the temple mount is currently there, the Israelis are already making plans to build it.

The Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill is currently spilling 5000 barrels of oil a day, that is 210,000 gallons of oil a day!, and the situation is expected to last for another 3 more months which is how long it will take for BP to setup another drill to give some relief to the main oil line. (If it works!) For a grand total of 18,900,000 gallons of oil into the ocean! If we can't cap that hole that oil is going to destroy the oceans of the world. It only takes one quart of motor oil to make 250,000 gallons of ocean water toxic to wildlife. Are you starting to get the magnitude of this?

I'm a big fan of history, so I would say go for studying ancient civilizations... I would encourage you to study it with a Biblical worldview though. If you look at it through the lens of God being in control over everything, you will see how God's plan has worked through history. I would avoid the astrology though, as the Bible is against it. If you're interested in origins I would suggest the Institute for Creation Research (icr.org).

With the many catastrophies occuring around the glob, it is almost certain that we are living in the last days. Me as a person I need to admit that I love my creator and His Son that He sent to die for my MANY sins. But I am confused as a christian as to whether I should believe what was just handed down to my people and I (African American) or should I reach beyond and sudy ancient civilization and astrology. Because even though I have great interest in it, I still believe in Christ i'm just alot more questionable about the stories that were handed down to us. Is that what he means by "MY people perish for lack of knowledge?"

The Bible says occupy until he comes. In Matthew 24:24-36, no man knoweth the time. Just be ready for our Lords return.

The Bible points to God as its author; yet it was written by human hands; and in the varied style of its different books it presents the characteristics of the several writers. The truths revealed are all "given by inspiration of God" (2 Timothy 3:16); yet they are expressed in the words of men. The Infinite One by His Holy Spirit has shed light into the minds and hearts of His servants. He has given dreams and visions, symbols and figures; and those to whom the truth was thus revealed have themselves embodied the thought in human language.

A lady wrote that in 1888 in the United States Of America. The words in the book say a lot about the author, for the author wrote it in English when many spoke a form of English known as Old English. The book continues with the following quotation:

The Ten Commandments were spoken by God Himself, and were written by His own hand. They are of divine, and not of human composition. But the Bible, with its God given truths expressed in the languag

It's so sad that so many of you misunderstand the book so badly. Here's a scriptural quote for you: "You are destroyed by your ignorance." I think it's in Proverbs.

I agree with Michelle. Your warnings are good things to say the least. A sky fairy indeed, there will come the King of kings in all majesty and power and every knee will bow. I also feel that we are living in the last days and I am glad you are giving warning of the imminent return of Christ. Good work.

Not likely Jeff... the Bible talks about you in 2 Peter 3:2-4: "That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation."

Hopefully, we are in the "final days" of fundamentalist idiocy and we can get down to actually living and solving problems instead of waiting on a sky fairy...

Very interesting Brooke - I still believe these are the final days whether or not BP's oil spill is in there or not. cheers :)
