In case you have been living under a rock, or in the South Pole, you are aware that Favre announced his retirement back in March following a season in which he led the Green Bay Packers to a 13-3 win-loss record, and to the NFC Championship game. Of course, Packers management had to move on, so they have thoroughly prepared Aaron Rodgers, Favre's successor, to take control of the imperative quarterback duties.
Just when the Packers fans and personnel seemed to accept the fact that jersey number 12 worn by Aaron Rodgers would take the snaps instead of jersey number 4, Favre began to indicate that he had a change of heart. The Packers enthusiasm level may have been elevated if this was in April, but not two months before the season was to begin.
To make a long story short, the Packers are ready to move past the Brett Favre era and into the Aaron Rodgers era. Meanwhile, Favre does not want to spend the final year, or years, of his career on the sidelines holding a clipboard. The Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New York Jets emerged as the favorites to win the Brett Favre sweepstakes.
On Thursday morning of August 7, 2008, the Green Bay Packers dealt Brett Favre to the New York Jets for a conditional fourth round pick in the 2009 NFL draft. However, the specifics of the trade may change due to how successful Favre is in New York. Nevertheless, the 16-year tenure in Green Bay ends.
How will this affect his legacy? Regardless of how Favre performs in New York, he will never be considered anything less than an NFL legend. He will always be one of the greatest players ever to grace the NFL gridiron. However, fans enjoy watching legends end their careers where they enjoyed the most success, such as John Elway in Denver, or Dan Marino in Miami.
Favre will always be a Green Bay Packer, and once the fans get over the shock of a Favre-less squad, they will savor the memories Favre created for the Green Bay Packers franchise.
This will have an effect on the NFL as a league as well. The three best quarterback of our generation are now in the same conference. Favre joins Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in the AFC. Of course, you have other star quarterbacks such as Carson Palmer and Ben Roethlisberger, making the AFC the superior conference when it comes to quarterbacks.
Additionally, does this help the New York Jets? Will this raise their stock? They will likely become the second best team the AFC East as opposed to the third best team, but they are no match for New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, and San Diego Chargers.
Hey, at least Favre will still be sporting the color green.

Post a CommentIt'll be weird seeing him in the Jet uniform indeed. And you're right that he's rightfully a legend... though, man... he hasn't been much of a team player of late. All the feuding in the past month was ugly indeed.
