Often times a business that seems to be running smoothly finds itself in trouble when customers begin to complain and employees are obviously not happy in their work. Although the product is being made and delivered, the profits are still in line, advertising and daily tasks are completed and there seems to be a non-stop stream of customers, old and new, there could be underlying occurrences going on behind the scenes that company owners are unaware of until it is too late. It is important to recognize these little things that make a difference within your company.

Although the day to day tasks seem to be getting completed, a manager can look for specific indicators to tell when there is something off. Employee commitment and satisfaction are keys to the company's growing business. It is vital that the manager of the department he or she is in charge of becomes an active part of the crew to stay in touch with the pulse of his employees.

A key indicator that employees are unsatisfied with their work is when they begin to voice their complaints. What once seemed to be running smoothly can quickly become an out-of-control chaos. As the complaints begin, others will follow throughout the departments and each are quick to blame another for the mistakes being made within the company.

Soon after, customers may begin to call in with their own concerns. Little things, such as expected courtesies are not longer being taken into consideration. The extra touches within the department are no longer being taken care of. And, all of the sudden employees begin calling in sick more than they used to. As time grows, managers may notice unhappiness among their employees. And before the company knows what happened, customers are leaving; employees argue among their co-workers; and not only is everyone unhappy, business is plummeting down.

The best way to avoid this situation is to have good communication within your department. Many times, it is the little things that happen through out the day that can make this situation mount up to a loss in business. Weekly or monthly meetings are always essential, but often times it is even more effective if managers take the time to speak one on one with each employee on a regular basis. During these times, if the manager makes notes during the meetings, this not only will help the manager to keep his thoughts in order, but also allow the employee to see that the manager truly cares about those who work within the department.

In most cases a manager can recognize a reoccurring theme after speaking with all employees. When taking that event into account, the manager can find ways to resolve the issue. If the manager realizes that it will take time to resolve the issue, it is important to relay that to the employees. All problems can not be solved immediately, but when employees realize that the manager does care about the issues that are important to them, attitudes and productivity will follow.
