Is Buying Government Auction Properties Really Profitable?

Citizen Reporter
Many properties come into government possession due to mortgage failure as well as due to illegal activities and tax evasion. Thousands of properties are seized by the government agencies every year and the government tries to recover some money by putting up these seized properties for public auction. Most of these properties have been seized from people who have committed various crimes and have been sent to jail. These properties are put up for bidding by the public and as the government is empowered to sell these propertiesat government auctions. These sales are irrevocable. Also government and military surplus items are available at these government auctions.

These seized properties put up for public auction may consist of vehicles, real estate, furniture and other household goods, pieces of art, jewelry, antiques and many other things. As the government is usually in a hurry to recover whatever is possible from these seized items they present some unique and profitable buying opportunities that are not seen at the usual auctions. Anything that is recovered from the perpetrators of crime is put up for auction and the original owner being convicted loses any ownership over them.

Many times, at federal government auctions or state government auctions, you will come across town houses, cabins, rest houses, mansions and even vacant lots belonging to former criminals. These former criminals may include drug dealers, tax evaders and gambling lords and they lose any claim to this property by virtue of being convicted. The law assumes that these properties were purchased from ill gotten money. These properties may also include commercial properties like stores, shops, ranches, farms and business premises. These auctions provide very good opportunities to ordinary people to own these properties at prices much below their fair market price.

Next to real estate properties, vehicles are the top items belonging to the criminal that come into government possession by law and the government is empowered to sell these vehicles at public auctions. Many types of vehicles including motorcycles, trucks, vans, luxury and ordinary cars, speedboats, sailboats and even snowmobiles are put up for sale. These are also great opportunities for people to such items at an affordable price. Many of the notorious criminals from whom these properties have been seized are quite wealthy and one can expect to get very expensive items at affordable prices at the police and government auctions or state government auctions.

Most of these properties are sold on 'as is' basis and one needs to inspect them thoroughly before bidding for them. Even then you don't know what kind pleasant surprises await you at such auctions. You may walk away with the deal of a lifetime. As many people are not aware of such auctions as they are not generally in public knowledge. Thus there is little competitive bidding at such auctions. Find out about US government auctions and visit them to find out what is up for sale. There is no fixed schedule for such auctions, so you have to keep track of them. A good way to find out about government actions is to search online. A good online resource is the U.S. Treasury - Seized Property Auctions website. In the past many people have acquired things they could only dream of acquiring under normal circumstances. There is no reason why you cannot also do so.
