Is Charlie Sheen Killing His Own Popularity?

Actor Charlie Sheen's increasingly erratic behavior has been the most entertaining pop culture phenomenon of 2011. His media blitz took him from "Good Morning America" all the way to the Guinness World Records for being the fastest person to reach 1 million followers on Twitter and then again, for the fastest time to 2 million followers.

But is the Sheen Machine losing steam? Not surprisingly, Warner Brothers has officially fired him from his TV hit, "Two and a Half Men" and now the unemployed "winner" is burning himself out on social networking. In an effort to bypass the media and get his gospel out directly to the people, he set up a Ustream channel to webcast from. The cringe-worthy first episode was an hour of Sheen and his friends joking amongst themselves and playing sound effects.

After that, for the first time since he joined Twitter, #winning was no longer trending. In response, the second episode cut out the friends and instead depicted a phone conversation between Charlie and someone that has a lot more media sense than he does. The voice on the other end of the line was advising him not to overexpose himself with Twitter and Sheen's Korner.

It doesn't take a media expert to realize that that's exactly what he is doing and that it's starting to get old. As much as we enjoy the priceless soundbites that his interviews have provided us, there's a lot to be said for the media filter. Out of all the interviews he gave and all the wild things he said, we really only remember two or three gems and they've already halfway to overused.

Sure, there may be some more great quotes hiding in Sheen's Korner, but the average person probably isn't going to sit through an hour of boring ranting every night with the hopes that something interesting will happen. Because let's face it, if something does, it will make the news and the replay will be available for all to see at their leisure. Continuing to try to address the people is just going to make everyone less and less interested in the inner workings of his "warlock" mind.

Getting your own catchphrase tattooed on your wrist is not cool; it's desperate and everyone can see that. Before the ink was dry, winning was already yesterday's news because catchphrases become old and unfunny. And it won't be long before "Tigerblood" and "Winning" go the way of "I'm Rick James, b***h!" and "That's what she said" to be greeted with groans instead of laughter.

Unfortunately for Sheen, his new material is not nearly as catching. Perhaps it's just been too much, too soon. And It won't be long until we look back on the time when that unemployed has-been Charlie Sheen introduced these silly words into our lexicon.
