Is Charlie Sheen Twitter Mania Disturbing?

Chris Houston
Is the Charlie Sheen twitter mania a bit disturbing? Should we all be discouraged that so many people would cling to the recently started Charlie Sheen twitter page-especially after some incredibly odd answers during nationally aired interviews? Before we get more into this story, you can find the Charlie Sheen twitter page here.

So Sheen opened up a Twitter account and set a so called Guinness Book record for the fastest person to ever reach 1 million followers. According to this story, Charlie Sheen has in return only followed just 24 people-obviously making it the most lopsided account in the history of Twitter. That's just a guess by the way.

Have 1 million people lost their minds? Or is Charlie Sheen just that interesting these days? The guy is throwing himself around for a billion interviews as he continues his parade of self public relations. We've been completely over-saturated with Charlie Sheen! Every time you flip the channel Charlie Sheen is doing some silly interview with another network--complaining about how CBS did him wrong and telling the world that he's "winning."

It's quite obvious the guy is "winning" at least something. Anyone who could add 1 million followers on Twitter is certainly cult-worthy. Kim Kardashian has manipulated Twitter to catapult her celebrity into another world. So why not Charlie Sheen? He could get more popular without every really having to act again. In fact, I think it's safe to say he probably has at this point. Charlie Sheen is becoming the spokesperson for every single person on the planet who is just a "bit" different from the rest. He's not representing the ordinary man-he's representing the "entitled" man who has special abilities and deserves to shower himself with whatever he feels like it. It's the typical "me" generation times ten. Whatever the case, it seems like it's actually working to his benefit. Charlie Sheen has found his niche. Some may have thought it was having the top ranked comedy on network television. Wrong! It was appealing to so many people who have felt unappreciated for being selfish. We all need to have our "me" time and "me" world, right? Why not?

Still, I find it amazing that, whether you agree or disagree with Sheen, people still are extremely interested in what he has to say. His life is surreal and the ultimate guilty pleasure for some people or so it seems. Or are 1 million people collectively watching to see if Charlie Sheen continues to commit career suicide? Either way, the guy certainly knows how to draw attention to himself. He's a one man marketing onslaught that doesn't look to be ending anytime soon. The Charlie Sheen Twitter page is probably just a small portion of what may come in the next month or two. I am sure at this point the movie and television offers are rolling in.

The producers of reality television programming are probably offering up millions of dollars to Sheen because the guy has become that captivating-whether he's lost a few brain cells from drug use is completely irrelevant. Charlie Sheen has become the single hottest topic of 2011 and there looks to be little letdown in that category. He continues to keep his name in the spotlight and improve his popularity and rank among celebrities in Hollywood. He may be hated. He may be loved. But gosh darn it, the guy is well-known now. More so than even before the seemingly tumultuous months he has now put in the past.

It's kind of ironic that this Charlie Sheen story started out about a guy who seemed to be "losing it." Somehow Charlie Sheen has spun his own life story in such a positive way that it appears to now be slowly working people over. We've seen the interviews with Sheen and we can all judge now on our own.

Sure there will be many people who just assume the guy is nuts based on those pieces of interviews. There will also be the same number of people who think the guy is a marketing genius. He has manipulated his own brand into something very marketable. The Charlie Sheen twitter page is just a small example of that.

As for his actual answers during interviews? It appears that at least a great portion of Americans are content with what he said and many people are empathizing with his life in general. It's kind of confusing that so many people appear to be overly appreciative of his brutal honesty-even if he does admit by his own terms that he is "special."

The sense of entitlement is scary but Charlie Sheen may ride that and this current wave of Twitter fans all the way to the bank. Just when you thought Sheen was pulling a Mel Gibson, he somehow in such an odd way is seemingly rescuing his career. It could be one of the most odd turn of events we've ever witnessed in the life of a celebrity. It could only perhaps be spelled out in a made for television feel good movie. But that's not his style.
It would have to be much bigger than that-much bigger! Because Charlie Sheen is special, man. He's "winning" and doesn't give a darn if you like it or not. So far, the people on board with his train wreck appear to be enjoying the ride. Even if the destination appears to eventually run straight off the tracks.
