Is Your Child in Too Many Extracurricular Activities?

Raising children is a challenging task now days and one of the best ways to keep children focused and out of trouble is by encouraging them to participate in extracurricular activities. Encouraging children to participate in activities outside of home and school life is important to both children and parents but there have to be a balance.

Today mothers and children are finding there is not enough time in the day or week in which to accomplish all that they have signed up for. With working parents and even stay at home parents you have to find a balance with you and your child's schedule. What starts out as a passion for a creative interest or sports interest can quickly turn to a frantic and busy schedule of practice and classes everyday of the week.

A child's education should be first and foremost and then extracurricular activities. With the homework loads children bring home on a daily basis there is not enough time for maintaining academic excellence, a balance of home life and family and extracurricular activities if the child is overloaded.

Where parents want their children to pursue their favorite sports and creative interests it is rather difficult for students to participate in everything they may have a desire to. Sit down and talk to your child and find out what his or her true passions are. What this has been determined give him or her choice in maybe one or two activities. Sports in particular are very demanding upon the time of a student. Generally students tent to move from one sport to the next depending on the season. Where this is not necessary an issue, insure the child maintains a balanced home life and academic life. Have family meetings the beginning of the school year or during the summer to determine what the school year holds and plan accordingly. Don't get burned out or allow your child to get burned out with the burden of too many extracurricular activities.
