Is Your Child's School Playing it Safe When it Comes to the H1N1 Virus?

School Strategies for Dealing with Swine Flu

Mary Lamphere
Doctors and the CDC are reporting flue cases above 300 per week throughout the entire summer when there is typically no sign of the flu and now it's back to school time. What does this mean? Well, for the past two months, we have seen flue cases at more than 300 times the common rate for summer time and that's been with children not in school! Where do viruses such as H1N1 or Swine Flue typically take off and effect hundreds at a time? That's right--School! So, now here we go sending our children back to school in hopes that our schools are properly dealing with the Swine Flu and praying that they will play it safe for our children's sake!

What are School Doing to Deal with and Prepare for Back to School and Swine Flu?

Many schools such as those in Miami-Dade county Florida will be offering additional teachings this year on the subjects of personal hygiene and most of all--hand washing! The CDC claims that one of our biggest defenses against the H1N1, Swine Flu Virus is proper hand washing and sterilization. The CDC recommends that we wash our hand with an antibacterial or hand soap for at least 30 seconds to kill germs and wash away any possible bacteria.

How Can You Get Your Child Ready for Back to School and Possibly for the Flu?

While nobody wants their child to end up sick, chances are that it will happen once your child goes back to school. Hundreds of thousands of children are likely to suffer from some degree of the flu especially once flu season rolls around again this fall and winter. You can prepare your child for the back to school season by informing him or her about the flu and how to stay safe. Not sharing drinks with others at school, proper hand washing techniques, and even symptoms of the flu are all things that you should be talking with your children about now to prepare them for the upcoming back to school season!

Playing it Safe for Back to School!

Most of all, schools and the CDC are asking that parents keep their children home from school if they happen to show any signs of the H1N1 Virus such as vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, cough, runny nose, stuffy nose, fever or aches and pains in the body. Teaching your children about these symptoms in an informative way will help if you have a child like mine who will never let you know if she's sick! Keep kids informed and stay in contact with schools about their preparedness for a flu outbreak to maintain comfort during this back to school season!
