Is Christianity Unhealthy?

Anastasia Zoldak
The other day, I was searching Movies.com looking up a movie when I ran across a banner ad for a movie called "The God Who Wasn't There" released by a company called Beyond Belief Media out of Los Angeles. Their PR campaign was amusing "Bowling for Columbine did it to the gun culture. Super Size Me did it to fast food. Now The God Who Wasn't There does it to religion." I never realized preaching about love was unhealthy.

In today's world, we try to be sensitive to the beliefs of others and to other religions that is except for Christianity. I really can't blame the average person for their feelings about what the modern Catholic Church has done to the Christian movement. It moved to appease rather than to educate and their ignorance of their apostolic beginnings is just a symptom of the coming Apocalypse. By the way, that's not necessarily a bad thing. That's if you read the bible. I personally could use a 1000 years of peace.

I'm writing this is because I'm concerned about the all of the personal attacks against a man that was born over 2000 years ago. His only crime was to try to make us realize that we are all special in the eyes of God. He told us to love one another and not to judge others until we could perfect ourselves in God's eye. And, to paraphrase Bill & Ted from their excellent adventure, "Be excellent to one another". This idea wasn't their idea; it was Christ's idea first.

Christ existed there is no doubt. He is historically written about in various Roman histories of the time. You could say he was the first true radical. That's what happens when you try to teach people about love and tolerance. They call you a radical, crazy, or dishonest. If, you don't believe me, review the lives of Gandhi, Anwar Sadat, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Humans usually kill those who talk about a real change from our baser instincts.

I like to think it's Satan just walking around. Yes, he exists too. Read the Old Testament about a guy named JOB and you'll really lean how he operates. Talk about having a great PR agent, most people believe in demons, ghost, and spirits. But, a guy named Christ walking around, please!

Getting back to Christ, two roman historians by the names of Josephus and another by the name Tacitus were ancient Rome's version of journalists Katie Couric and John Stewart. Both these historians talked in detail about this guy Christ walking around creating problems for the Jewish leaders of their time. Both also report his trial with the man in charge of Israel at the time Pontius Pilate and of his death. Now you don't have to believe me, Google it yourself. While you're at it, Google the physical trauma of a crucifixion, it isn't pretty and it makes water-boarding look like a recreational sport. Mel Gibson may be a jerk but he got the details of Christ's suffering right. That's not anti-jewish; it's just the facts of an event in a more brutal time.

Now Christ's apostles write that he rose from the dead, even if you don't believe some dead man-walking tale you have to wonder why twelve guys would basically commit social, financial, and physical suicide for a fake. None of these guys died peacefully in bed. We know this because of the ancient church, which is by the way NOT the Catholic Church. It has detailed accounts concerning what each of them did after Christ's death. You have to ask yourself what's up with that. You don't have to take my word for it read the ancient texts yourself. If you're unwilling to do that then you shouldn't be criticizing Christ and those who believe in him.

Here's the bottom-line, does it really matter if Christ rose from the dead or who his parents were? I think it's more important to God that his message is not lost. You can seek that out yourself in the main gospels of the bible and the other Gnostic gospels. Yep there are other versions of the gospel that didn't make it to the final four. One of my favorite, by the way, is from a much-maligned guy named Judas. I mean who though that Christ had a sense of humor!

For those of you who don't know there are other gospels running around that were never approved but they give us a more round view of this guy Christ and his real message. Don't take anyone's opinion of the man find out for yourself the difference between the PR campaign against him and the real son of man.
