Eventually the question begged to be asked: If you don't believe in Christ, why are you having Christmas? The answer was basically that everyone does it. Do they?
Many claiming to be Christians attempt to have a totally pagan, secular Christmas. Not one hint of Christ is anywhere in their home, life or celebration. This might be due to habit rather than intention.
Because Christmas is celebrated by atheists, pseudo-Christians and devout Christians alike, one shouldn't be too surprised to see decorations they might consider objectionable or even offensive. However, some don't see this as a religious celebration and have long known Christ was not born in December.
The Christmas celebrated today may not be anything like what our grandparents celebrated. Often church is skipped, donations to the poor are sometimes overlooked, and greeting cards are done online.
Those taking Christmas to be the birth of Christ also sprinkle secular celebrations throughout their holiday. Somehow this has become accepted by many. It is not unusual to see Christian symbols on a Christmas tree, which is admittedly from pagan origin itself. Also, Christmas ornaments may be of Jesus on one side of the tree and Santa Claus on the other.
Churches that do not agree with some of the habits displayed this time of year seem to say little. Why would a church discourage members from doing what makes them happy, even if the church does not agree? Unhappy congregants no doubt donate less.
Those not celebrating Christmas in a secular manner are often criticized. Although the reasons are well presented by the Christians not participating, those carrying on with pagan rituals may scoff at church goers that are not involved.
According to a short survey conducted by this writer, many don't want to share their holiday pet peeves. The people sharing comments stated the most annoying things about Christmas are the 'unchristmas' stuff that some do, such as: Getting drunk at a party because it is Christmas, then using the excuse that it was done because it was Christmas.
Another comment seen several times was that some were kind to others during part of the Christmas holiday, but didn't care just a few days before or after. All thought anyone who wanted to celebrate Christmas should do so as they wished, even if they were atheists.
