Is Christmas Coming Earlier?

Detroit Radio Station Gets into the Holiday Spirit

Eric Tuchelske
Remember how I wrote about "Halloween Carols" a few weeks ago? Well, just as I predicted the radio station here in Detroit started playing Christmas Carols this morning at 5:00 a.m.

This year instead of going in full force they're scattering the songs with their regular programming. However, the only problem is it doesn't feel like Christmas yet (especially when The Carpenters are singing about going on a sleigh ride).

Don't get me wrong. I love Christmas music but by the time Christmas gets here I'll probably be tired of hearing the same songs over and over with different versions no less. No wonder people who work at a Hallmark store can't wait until February when all the Christmas displays are put away, but then again they only get a four month reprieve until the displays go up for the Christmas in July sale.

But don't think it's just Christmas songs I've heard within the last 24 hours. I've already seen about five Christmas commercials (on Halloween no less) and the radio station is also running them.

Stores have also gotten a jump on the holiday season by starting Black Friday sales before Thanksgiving and many online retailers are offering incentives also.

So when does the holiday season begin? I've always believed it to be the day after Thanksgiving but when you see a commercial for "The Clapper", you'll know Santa's on his way and the start of the holiday season.

One of my co-workers and I were talking about Christmas (it is 35 weeks away) this morning and we both subscribe to XM (well, if you want to get serious Sirius/XM (talk about a sucky merger). Anyway if you were disappointed about the merger and missing XM's Twisted Christmas drop me a note and let's see if we can't bring it back for this season!
