Is a Civilization of Barbarism Truly Civilized?

Caleb Gerdes
There is an ugliness that the society of our peers pushes upon us. An ugliness that claims our comfort and our convenience is more important than the knowledge that people may be, for our sake, destroyed. Spiritually rather than physically. Physically in conjunction with a souldeath. I beg to say that we will kill our siblings physically after we have, in our gluttony sucked every ounce of soul from them.

I am saying to you that we have not been able to let go of our cannibalism. We don't eat others flesh, but we devour their souls, hearts. It is disgusting how deeply we have built barbarism up as a form of civilization. We, as a race of beings have not and may not ever gain the title of being civilized, unless of course we always define civilization in comparison to others we define as less civilized. If this is to be our function of definition we need for there always to be a less civilized culture, a less civilized people. Why is it impossible, improbable that we as a culture can gain an intrinsic sense of civility? Can people gain an intrinsic beauty?

I am but one man and possibly incompetent at that, but in my far reaching goals, I want to define civilization. I believe it is a group of people who have only two aims in their heart, aims that cannot contradict each other. One aim would be the pursuit of all the greatest and deepest desires of the individual; the pursuit of the cause of the individual, why they exist and why they are part of the whole. The other aim would be the pursuit of complete support for all within that group and the group as a whole. Although these are lofty and currently, with a society such as ours, unattainable, I believe that a person alone can be a civilization. I can pursue these two aims even while others do not.

Currently I have, with great sorrow, found a deep facet of our blackened hearts. I have found that there are children within our world and within our society that are being destroyed, they are being torn, bit by bit. They are being eaten alive by our lust. There are children who are forced from the possible love of their parents into a life of prostitution and slavery. There are children who are forced from their childhood into a life of forced labor and disgusting conditions of living. I am asking you if you can ever claim to have any civility with you if you do not do something of significance to change this future, our present. Wake Up! Don't be so despondent! We can, through pursuit of our own hearts, save our civilization. We can destroy our very own barbarism.
