Every year as we approach Sept 11, you begin to see new films and this year a new movie on what happened on that horrible day. But why do people constantly continue to relive painful and hurtful experiences? Does it really help people and is it therapeutic? Many doctors will tell you that it is very helpful for people to talk things over and get them out in the open. But to relive a horrible event year after year, only seems to make it harder for people.
Instead of moving on they dwell on their loss, and their pain. This in no way can be very helpful. Just think about it for a minute. Do you really want to watch a movie that shows how your loved ones died and in some cases suffered? I realize that the movies focus on the heroes in the story, but this leaves many others feeling hurt and having to face that pain all over again.
The media and the producers who are looking to make a quick buck do not really care about the families or people who lost. They are just trying to earn their paycheck. Why have a ceremony year after year to remember something as horrible as this. This is not to say that there is anything wrong with remembering your loved ones who lost their lives. You should always keep them in your memory. But having a ceremony every year does no good for anyone.
Here are several reasons why I think that they are not very useful. First of all more people end up getting upset about how the ceremonies are handled or not handled. There is usually a lot of arguing and people end up getting a lot more upset that they really have too. Everyone has their own opinion and idea on what should be done and how it should be handled. Some people feel that it has been handled very nicely in the past, while others feel that their loved ones were not remembered properly.
I will say that it is very helpful for children to talk about how they feel. Especially if they lost a parent or someone they truly cared for. In their case it should be discussed on a yearly basis, especially since it can be a very painful experience. It may however be very difficult for some children to revisit the site or to even attend some type of memorial service.
So before you take your child to one of these memorial services it may be a good idea to talk to your child and see what they want to do. In some cases it is helpful to talk about these things, but there are many who do not find these ceremonies helpful and who do not agree with them. The bottom line is that reliving the pain may help or it may not it really is up to the person. But if after several years you find that you can still not let go of the pain then it would be in your best interest to seek additional help to cope.
