Is it a Curse? Or Are the Chicago Cubs Destined to Never Win One Because of the Goat?

Richard McDuff
They are at it again. It's been 101 years since the Chicago Cubs won their last MLB's World Series. They lost two quickly to the LA Dodgers. They were ugly loses, as well. Full of errors. A comedy of errors.

Every time the Chicago Cubs make it into the World Series playoffs, I will automatically cheer for them. It is just a masochistic neurosis with me. I always cheer for the team that hasn't won it for many years - like 100 years.

Everybody loves a Cubbie. Another classic reason to cheer for the Chicago Cubs. You just can not hate them. You can pity them, but you can not hate them.

They have lost two very ugly games to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The videos from these games could be used by Little League teams to show them how not to make big league errors.

They settled down for the third game, but by then it was too late. They had soundly defeated themselves. There are no excuses, bad breaks, a fan catching a fly ball, bad umping, etc. They beat themselves with a little league performance.

Self-fulfilling Destiny?

Four errors in one game, the team with the best record in the National League all season. The infield was booting the ball like a little league team. The crowd was filling Wrigley field with a chorus of boos.

The Cubbies best pitcher was chased in the second inning, because his infield couldn't hold the ball. Even catcher Geovany Soto bounced two throws to ace pitcher Carlos Zambrano .

How can a team with the best record in baseball lose this ugly?

I am not a superstitious person. Far from it. But when I see the Chicago Cubs play in the post season, I wonder if a curse is possible.

Can a curse be instantly transfered to the subconscious as soon as you put on a Cubs uniform.

Many of the players on this team were acquired through trades or free agency. There is no handing down of the curse through the ages. The curse of the father will be visited upon the sons.

I would suggest that the Cubs change their uniforms every year.

The fans know the Chicago Cubs Choke.

I know this one. I cheer for them every time they pley in the World Series play offs. But I do it with reservation. I know that they won't win Baseball's most coveted prize. I know that there will be the choke, and that I will be disappointed.

I think this is why the Cub fans are so quick to boo. It is a defense mechanism. They will be disappointed yet again.

How strong can the curse of a Billy Goat really be?

Billy Sianis is said to have placed this curse on the Chicago Cubs on October 6th, 1945 during game 4 of the 1945 World Series during the seventh inning when he was asked to leave and take his billy goat with him.
It seems that Mr Sianis was very fond of goats. He took his beloved goat "Billy" with him to many other games - and paid for the goat's seat. He probaby bought it something to eat, because goats will eat anything (they do!), he probably bought it something to drink, etc. He was allowed to parade it around in the field with a sign around it's neck stating "We have got Detroit's Goat!"

According to Sianis's family he is said to have sent a telegram to Philip K. Wrigley, the owner of the Cubs, that said "You are going to lose this World Series and you are never going to win another World Series again. You are never going to win a World Series again because you insulted my goat".

While the Cubs have appeared in the World Series since then they have not won a World Series since 1908, they have never won it. They were knocked out quickly in the 2008 World Series. Will there be an opportunity next year? With trades and free agency, you can never be sure.

I don't believe in the curse, but I sure do feel for the Cubbies fans.
