Is Daniel Negreanu a Poker Expert or a Poker Fraud?

Daniel Negreanu, Expert or Fraud?

Statsman
The local paper where I live runs a weekly poker article written by Daniel Negreanu. Negreanu writes the article each week as if he is an expert at playing poker, especially Limit or No-Limit Hold 'Em Poker.

Negreanu writes the articles as if he is an absolute Poker expert and has all the answers to winning at Poker. How to bet? When to bet? How much to bet? Reading your opponents. It doesn't matter what the Poker topic, he has all the answers to help you win.

Is Daniel Negreanu such a great Poker player that he really does have all the answers he claims to? I decided to check out Daniel Negreanu's statistics to see if he really is a Poker Expert.

Poker players are judged by how many World Series of Poker (WSOP) wins they have. (Each tournament winner is awarded a bracelet, so the number of bracelets you have determines how good you are.) Daniel Negreanu is such an "expert" Poker player that I would have expected him to have won a great deal of these bracelets. You know how many he has? Three! And in the biggest World Series of Poker Tournament, called the Main Event, Negreanu has zero wins! He has never won the biggest Poker Tournament.

Negreanu won his first WSOP tournament in 1998. Since 1998 there have been 249 WSOP Tournaments. So, out of a possible 249 Wins since 1998, Negreanu, the supposed Poker expert with all the answers, has won 3 Tournaments. Three out of 249 possible wins, or just 1.2%. It's possible Negreanu has not played in all 249 Tournaments since 1998. But it's also likley he played in Tournaments prior to 1998, when he won his first. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say he played in 200 overall WSOP Tournaments. That bumps his winning percentage up to a whopping 1.5%.

Does a 1.5% winning percentage sound like something an expert in any field should have? One point five percent. C'Mon! If you're going to act like an expert and have all the answers can you please back it up a little!

Over the last 6 months, Negreanu wrote in his column that he would like to see the WSOP Tournaments vastly increase the amount of money each player would have to put up to enter the Tournaments. In the biggest Tournament, called the Main Event, players must put up $10,000 each to enter. Negreanu wants that raised to $50,000. Why?

By raising the amount each player must put up to play, you would exclude a vast amount of people from entering. Daniel Negreanu, the supposed Poker Expert, wants to eliminate as many competitors as he can before the first card is even dealt! Does that sound like something an Expert would want in any field? Shouldn't an expert welcome all challengers and not be afraid to face anybody?

Somebody who has won a very low percentage of the Tournaments he has entered, and wants to exclude as many players as possible from playing against him, sounds far more like a Fraud to me.

this is the stupidest most biased article i've read. your rank isnt dependant on how many "bracelets" you have. its how much money you've won. he's made a profit of over 15 mil in tournaments alone. thats not including cash games. have you ever made that much? an even percentage of that much?
    dont thinks so.

good article... The reality of poker is at the higher stakes, there isn't much "dead money" and since they all play pretty "correct" there's a LOT more luck and varience than anyone wants to admit. I think the author should have compared stats to OTHER pros, rather than in isolation. Also how do average popular allegedly good "live" players in tournaments do online?

Dude you suck, Negreanu has now 4 WSOP bracelts, 2 WPT (World Poker Tour) titles, and as we speak he is in the final 6 at an EPT tournament (European poker tour), this 3 promotions are the most important in the world , there are only 2 individuals who won all 3 of them , Negreanu is on his way to be the thirs triple-crown winner. Also, if he wins this today, he will cash in 700k $ and will become history's best poker player in terms of prizes won, around 14 million dollars. And yes he is a poker expert, and there are also many others, of you are an expert that doesnt mean that you have to win everything in you path. Statsman you're an idot frankly. Many middle fingers from Romania.

Yeah I just gotta say, this is the most idiotic article I've ever read about anything. You do not know what you are talking about. You're a complete idiot.

Eventhough this is mad old i still wanna add... due daniels second place finish at the 2009 wsop europe main event, he is the all-time tournament money earner with over 12 million dollars in tournament winnings.... that stat may have changed but i really doubt it... he may only have 4 wsop bracelets(twith only 19 other players winning more then him) but he also has 2 WPT titals.. and it second in all time cashes for the WPT.... negreanu is the farthest thing from a fraud... his stats are far more impressive then this idiot says... being a great player isnt about winning the tournaments,, its about winning that money,, which he has done,,, more then any other player
    end of rant :D

statsman is the biggest freakin idiot ever. shut you mouth and go put your finger up your butt! retard!

  • Truth12/19/2009

    Statsman = dumbass.

How many bracelets do you have? And the ones you made in kindergarten (all three years you had to take it) don't count.

This is so stupid. Really this is the dumbest thing i think i have ever read. Daniel Negreanu has made more money then any living poker player. The comment about the main event is probably the stupiest thing I have ever heard. The field is so big for anyone to cash is making a great run at it. Really a pro hasn't won the main event in years so if Daniel isn't a pro then who is? Your arguement is that anyone who wins the main event is automatically the best? Don't talk about things you don't have a clue about. I would be honored to take lessons from Daniel and if I had that chance i would be a lucky man.

Poker is to a great extent a game of luck. Deal the cards.
