You continue to go out on dates with this person because they are so much fun to be around. Their craziness heightens the mood and sparks your interest. However, once the relationship begins to develop into something serious you begin to notice something isn't quit right. Before you assume that there is no problem you should consider the facts.
Mental disorders are very common in the United States. The National Institute of Mental Health conducted important research which indicates that mental health disorders are widespread throughout society. Consider the following:
-Most cases of mental disorder start at the age of 14 which is about the time we start dating.
-Majority of American's will experience a mental disorder at one point in their life times.
-Approximately 25% of society could be diagnosed with a disorder in any given year.
-Most disorders revolve around anxiety (28.8%), impulse-control (24.8%), mood disorders (20.8%) and substance abuse (14.6%).
- Females have a higher rate of mood and anxiety disorders while males are more likely to have impulse disorders and higher rates of substance abuse.
Disorders are common and if we have dated more than one person chances are that we have dated someone with a mental disorder. The signs that someone is suffering from some type of disorder are erratic behavior that seems fun because it is so out of place, passion that has no bounds to place or timing, heavy drinking that seems to be common when alcohol is involved, serious jealousy, failure to see another person's point of view even if it makes sense, anger that cannot be controlled (i.e. breaking things) and promiscuous behavior that is compulsive.
If you are dating such a person you have to consider the long-term implications and struggles you may have to face. Short-term symptoms are not so problematic as most of these are resolved within a short period of time. However, if these behaviors persist there is a chance these problems are deemed serious and may continue to affect your relationship way into the future.
