Is it a Date or Hanging Out?

Michael Martin
Some guy just asked you out earlier today. After a few quiet moments, you got to thinking -- is it a date or hanging out? If it feels like you're caught somewhere in the middle, take a look at some of these hints and see if your "meeting" gives you an indication one way or the other.

Think about how new this guy is in your life. If you don't know him very well and it's been relatively recent since you met him, it's a good bet it's a date. Typically, guys don't ask girls out just for the sake of hanging out. He's interested and wants to get to know you better. Otherwise, he has better things to do like hanging out with his buddies and hitting the bar scene. If you have some possible interest, bring your A-game. It's a date.

However, if you have known this guy for a while, and sparks seem non-existent when you get together, he's probably just asking to hang out and keep him company. Perhaps he has something on his mind and he needs a "friend's perspective" on the issue. If he talks about other women, it's a dead giveaway the meeting is not a date. It's hanging out.

Where he takes you becomes a pretty good signal into whether it's a date. If you're catching a burger and fries at Burgers R Us, it could be an indication it's just hanging out or he needs some help in the romantic department. If you split the costs of the meal, you're relegated to friendship status-it's hanging out. However, if you arrive at what looks like a chic place with some atmosphere, it's a good bet he wants to impress, so saddle up for a date.

During the date, his flirtatious nature speaks volume. If he seems playfully competitive with you, take this as a strong flirtatious sign, according to singlescafe.net, so just roll with it. Flirting is a good thing because it means he's attracted to you.

How the date ends should also give you a clue. If he mentions I'll call you or says something definitive that he wants to see you again, perhaps for dinner, you just had a date. Now, get ready for date # 2.
