Is Discrimination Always Wrong?

Benjamin Ira Mikell
For quite awhile, I have pondered this topic and how to best approach it in such a way that is not only beneficial, but also helps us understand it from a biblical perspective. This article will basically be an introduction of the subject of discrimination intermingled with observations that I have made through the years
.

Before I begin, let me first mention that I believe many in this country, including a certain number of politicians, promote the idea that discrimination, regardless of how it is done and who it is performed against, is always wrong. In their zeal, they desire to make all forms of discrimination illegal by passing various laws that must be enforced.

What I have observed through the years is a misunderstanding of what discrimination truly means. This misunderstanding, whether out of really not having a proper understanding of discrimination or knowing what it means and ignoring it, has created things such as special rights to a certain class of people.

I truly believe that to discriminate against someone simply because of their race, gender, and religion is always wrong. But, on the other hand, we discriminate on other levels everyday that are not necessarily bad. These things should not be outlawed and punished severely. If someone is performing this type of discrimination with the wrong motive, then such should be punished. Many of those who do such are doing it for the right reasons and are being attacked by those with impure motives.

When we discriminate throughout out life each day, we do things such as choosing who will be our friends and who we will always stay away from; choosing which businesses we will purchase the products and services that we need; who we will invite into our homes to have dinner with and fellowship; and voicing our concerns about the sinful things in our country by saying abortion and homosexuality is wrong as taught in the Holy Scriptures.

What I intended with this introduction is to encourage us to discuss this subject because it is important. It is my hope and prayer that, together, we can discuss it and come away with a better understanding of what God teaches about discrimination.
