Everyone loves a bargain, but perhaps the thrill of bidding and competing against another person for an item is the driving factor that keeps people returning over and over again. It's easy to get caught up in bidding when suddenly someone bids against you. Sometimes, it seems to be more about winning than bidding. It's a thrill when the auction end is near, and you are the high bidder. The seconds tick by, and at the last 20 seconds you are outbid. Scrambling to submit another bid really gets the adrenaline flowing, and the thrill of winning becomes more important than the item.
Having been on both sides of the auction, I've purchased and sold many items on Ebay, over the years. Sometimes you happen to find an incredible deal, and get it for an unbelievably great price. Other times, you might find that you paid more for the item than the price would have been at a local retail outlet, once the shipping charges are added to the final auction price.
Most sellers are reputable, but not all. Before placing your bid, be sure to check the seller's rating and feedback. Many times, sellers have more or equal negative feedback than positive feedback. These stats might be unfortunate circumstances that could be explainable, or warnings for 'buyers to beware.' Of course, you never really know the performance or reliability of a seller until you do business with them.
Reading, thoroughly, the seller's shipping information is critical. Some sellers do not ship immediately, others do. Some offer to refund your money if you're not satisfied, but most don't. Some will only compensate disappointed buyers with store credit, and all require the item to be returned at the buyer's expense, which can equal less return than spent after double shipping charges are added to the amount paid for the item itself. And, some will not refund under any circumstances if the buyer did not purchase shipping insurance at the close of the auction. In other words, if it gets broke or damaged in the mail, you bought it, and it's yours, baby!
Is Ebay the best place to shop? Of course, anyone that shops on Ebay would have their own opinion of this question. Personally, I would say it's a good place to 'begin' your search a particular item, but cannot say it is the 'best' place to shop. It's like anything else, if the experience is good, then it would be rated high on a buyer's point standing. If the experience was not so good, that will reflect on every seller, and Ebay as a whole.
