Is the Economy Looking Up?

Micheal E. Brinkley
I find it somewhat amusing that as the news continues to say something about our economy getting better every few days, it's not really showing amongst the average people. Jobs are still nearly impossible to find. If you go out and start filling out applications for jobs, even those at fast food restaurants, there's a good chance you will never find one. Or sometime go in and take a look around your local unemployment office, they've always got plenty of people filling up the lobby. Look around folks, the economy's not getting better. It fluctuates a lot, but it's not looking good. Jobs are gone, prices are high, and nobody has any money left.

I guess the question is, what exactly is being done to fix our economic situation. Well, the sad answer to that question is nothing. President Obama continues to say how much he's going to do to give the economy some life. But all I keep seeing is bailouts for huge corporations who turn around and spend huge sums of money paying their top employees huge bonuses. People are losing everything because they can't pay their bills, but the men in the fancy offices get to take vacations with the money they get through government bailouts. Something about that doesn't seem right exactly. If Obama is going to continue to throw money at people who already have to much, why not at least put some restrictions on it. If a company gets a government bailout, why not make sure that the money is used to save the company, and not give it's CEO's and other high payed employees huge bonuses? Take away the bonuses from the fat cats at the top. Hell, one of the bonuses given to a CEO could give smaller bonuses to a good chunk of the average work force. You would have happier employees who would work faster and produce more.

Or why not take some of that money and put it into production. Think about it people, why not produce products that people can afford by using some of that money. Frankly, I'm tired of going to the grocery store and buying a gallon of milk for five dollars. I'm sure there are people paying plenty more than that too. The prices are ridiculous! Prices go up while people get laid off and fired left and right! If our economy is going to have a chance of getting better in the near future, someone on top has to decide to start looking at the regular citizens who actually have the ability to boost the economy. A few millionaires with a nice bonus in their pockets are going to help anything.

On the other hand, I see people who sit around and complain about the economy and never do anything about it. How is sitting in front of the television, watching the news and complaining about everything going to fix the problem. It's not! There are plenty of ways to get our voices heard. Go online and write some articles. Write a letter to representatives in congress, or even the president. I guarantee you that if more people started getting vocal and actually taking some initiative, we could get something done. This country was founded on the basis of government for the people and by the people. It's our job to make sure that our leaders know that they are screwing up and we all know it. We all have voices, so why not use them?
