Is Facebook Really Shutting Down on March 15?

Robert Dougherty
Is Facebook really shutting down on March 15? Stories of Facebook really shutting down on March 15 haven't really been taken seriously. Nevertheless, once the Weekly World News made up such a report, it reached the top of search engines anyway. Since 500 million users frequent the social network now, and since the company is worth billions, it would be major worldwide news if it did go offline. However, news of Facebook really shutting down on March 15 would be more credible from another website.

The Weekly World News alleged that Mark Zuckerberg held a press conference, where he announced his site would be closed. Zuckerberg supposedly said he had to "put an end to the madness" since the stress of running the site was "ruining my life.

Since the Weekly World News "reported" Facebook really shutting down on March 15, it has circulated throughout the Internet. Whether people actually believe it or not - and virtually no one might - the mere suggestion of the site closing is still leading Google Trends.

If the report wasn't meant to be a hoax, it was most likely satire. They quote Zuckerberg as saying that people will now "have to go outside and make real friends. That's always a good thing." Given Zuckerberg's reputation, and his depiction in The Social Network, almost no one likely believes he would say that.

If Facebook was really shutting down on March 15, it would be reported by many more legitimate news sources. They would have even been at the supposed press conference that Zuckerberg held as well. Even though yesterday's news cycle was dominated by the Gabrielle Giffords shooting, there would have been room on the news to fit this story in, and there wasn't.

Since the website is now the most powerful place on the Internet, it is fitting that the Internet rumor mill went after it. It has already been the subject of criticism this week, after Goldman Sachs invested in the company, and allowed it to avoid some public regulations.

Perhaps because of the recent controversy, it inspired the report of Facebook really shutting down on March 15. The company is rumored to go public in 2012, but if they do, then more of their records and books would have to be revealed. The Goldman Sachs investment is seen as a way to get around that, which has fueled speculation on what's really going on.

Would Facebook really shut down rather than reveal more of itself, its finances and records? Despite the Weekly World News's article, it appears to be extremely unlikely. Yet even though the report was debunked yesterday, it still seems to have a few friends.

It's unlikely, Steve Jobs created Apple... he didn't get fed up with pressure and permanently leave Apple... Why the deuce would Mark Zuckerberg shut down Facebook? Does he even realize what a mistake that will be for business?

to take face book away would not be good for our children. there is so many children that talk on there and gets there feelins out. instead of harming themselfs or people. i am a parent I read what they say. I have facebook they have added me as a friend. thats not like children to except a parent they think we don't listen. this world is messed up they need something and facebook is it. when a good thing is going it gets tooken away. I think our goverment is no good they have took our rights and freedom away. our children don't have a chance. they only have each other and facebook is there way to stay sain.
