Is Facebook Turning into MySpace?

With All of the New Features that Facebook is Offering to Download, What Will Facebook Become?

Jason Freeden
As Facebook owners continue to see new applications being added to their precious alternative to MySpace, they might be experiencing the same thing that they experienced with MySpace. As of Marth 24th, we saw the application section of Facebook open up. Originally this wasn't such a bad idea because I figured it would add some spice to the Facebook service, but now it is just getting plain ol' ridiculous. There are so many applications on Facebook now that you can basically call it MySpace's twin.

Let's discuss a few of the annoying applications that Facebook developers have added to the service, shall we? Something that is very similar to MySpace, Top Friends, has been recently added to Facebook. You may add up to 24 friends to this list, which takes up a lot of space. Ok, even though this is similar to MySpace, I can accept this. Second, there is a graffiti application titled "Graffiti", this is just stupid. MySpace also has a program similar to this that people can add, but it's just not needed on a service as mature as Facebook. You can scribble on your friends walls, but why do you need to do that when you can just write on their wall? Simple things do not need to be upgraded, please.

A couple other applications that aren't AS annoying as the others, but are still pretty pointless are the Hot or Not and Favorite Peeps applications. First off, the Hot or Not application is basically something where you can rate your friends from 1 to 10, a scale that ranks how "Hot" or "Not" they are. Anyhow, it's pointless and there already is a website out there that allows people to do that. As a matter of fact, there are probably hundreds of sites out there that allow people to do this. Secondly, the "Favorite Peeps" application is almost identical to the "Top Friends" application. Why do we need another one? It's just stupid, like I said before.

Believe it or not, there are some pretty neat applications out there that serve a fairly decent purpose. One of them I really like is the "Movies" application, which allows people to rate and review their favorite movies. I really enjoy this application because I enjoy writing movie reviews, so it actually serves a great purpose for me and many other people. This I can handle, since it does serve a TRUE purpose, rather than choosing 24 of my favorite friends, meanwhile have my other friends arguing and fighting over the fact that they weren't added to my Top Friends list.

Another application that would have been fine without all of these extra applications is the "i Like" application, which allows a user to post their favorite music on their profiles. Some people will think of this as an exact copy-cat of the music application of MySpace that plays a certain person's favorite tunes, but it's not. You have the option of clicking the play button of a certain song on that specific person's profile. A lot better than the MySpace music script. There is also a game that you can play, the iLike Challenge is very similar to "Name that Tune", which is a very fun game. I have actually played this on Facebook and find it very fun.

Seeing that there are plenty of ridiculous applications out there that mimic MySpace in every way possible, there are still some pretty good ones. There are even some decent programs on MySpace, but I won't go that far to tip my hat to MySpace, it's still a virus waiting to happen. Please Facebook, do not turn out to be like MySpace, whatever you do!

the worst part of facebook is IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO NAVIGATE! the applications--you can ignore them...but just searching for people becomes a huge hassle...plus most people on there are under 21...moo. (yeah i mooed:P)

If the competition grows, there is no surprise that Facebook will try to do what it can to appeal to it's members. While that may be understandable, no company should sacrifice it's quality and appeal. there are some people who prefer facebook to myspace, so they should keep that in mind instead of bombarding their users with fancy and confusing applications. Great article.

Myspace makes huge money, it's only fair that Facebook follows in their footsteps, lol. The money is definitely there for Facebook, I would think they would be making a lot of money, even without all of these applications. They had millions and millions of members before all of these apps were added. Nice article.
