Here are some interesting facts about our water.
Over two thirds of U.S. cities and towns have fluoridated water running from the taps. In 1999 the CDC named fluoridation of community water one of the top ten public health achievements of the 20th century.
Well now there is another side to the story. In March of 2006 a panel of dentists, toxicologists, and epidemiologists assembled by the National Research Council (NRC) determined that the levels of fluoride in our drinking water is too high. The panels findings show that the level of fluoride permitted by the EPA can cause health problems after extended use. It can cause a weakening of bones and damage our teeth.
A Harvard study has suggested that fluoridated water has been a probable cause of a rare bone cancer called osteosarcoma in young boys. They discovered that boys who grew up drinking water containing just 0.7mg/L of fluoride were up to 5 1/2 times more likely to developed osteosarcoma then boys in areas where the water contained much less.
According to University of Kansas Medical Center Toxicologist Emeritus John Doull, PhD, The EPA recommended levels of fluoride are much to high and can result in damaging the enamel of our teeth.
Several studies from China have found a common link between high levels of fluoride and IQ deficits in children. In one town with 2.5 mg/L of fluoride in the water, children tested at least 8 points lower on average then children who had only trace amounts of fluoride in their drinking water at home.
In 2005, cities in 5 states voted to reject, abandon, or prohibit water fluoridation.
Municipal Employees who add fluoridation chemicals to the community water supply must wear protective clothing and respirators. Industrial workers regularly exposed to fluorine the gas form of fluoride, have suffered skin, lung, and gastrointestinal problems. Some have even died.
We each have to do the research and weigh the risks against the benefits of having fluoride in our drinking water. I myself have decided I would rather not drink chemically enhanced water.
