Is Freelancing for You?

Elizabeth Pou
Most people would like the opportunity to be able to freelance. This would eliminate dealing with a boss, office politics or dealing with rush hour traffic. Sounds like a great way to make money, right? Also, freelance work doesn't include a steady paycheck, a Christmas bonus, and health or retirement benefits. Nevertheless, freelancing is more attractive to people that want to be self employed.

Consider Your Budget

Many freelancers are not concern with making a lot of money in the beginning. If you are going to be a freelancer then you will need money for living expenses. You will need money for living expenses and a savings account. If not, you will have to postpone freelancing until you are financially able to leave a regular job. Also, you can try freelancing part time basis before easing into fulltime self employment. When you are able to make a steady profit from freelancing then you can quit the 9 to 5 job.

Consider Your Personality

Freelancing is a business that can be lonely because there's not much contact with other people. Many freelancers can go days with only making contact with people through email and video chat. Send emails and video chat doesn't make up for having lunch with people from the office or having coffee in the break room.

Many freelancers will need the personality to be self disciplined. It can be hard to not having a boss in charge, distractions from the TV, and sales at the mall. This can be a problem for even the most self-disciplined person. Most people think freelancing is an easy job but it's not so easy. Living expenses and passion can be motivators for succeeding at freelancing. If freelancing is something that you would like to pursue then give it a try. It's good to do plenty of research for any project.

Is There a Market for Your Talents?

There are a lot of talented and self disciplined people in this world. Also, there are a lot of talented people that are not able to make money with their talents. Moreover, there has to be a market for whatever service or product that you are providing. The popular freelance markets are writing, web design, editing, photography, graphic design, Internet marketing, and software development. These are some freelance opportunities but are others available. There still need to be lots of research done regardless of your talent. Also, it would help to research how much people are paying for your certain talent. You will need to determine if it's possible to make a living from freelancing.

Freelancing appears to be easy but everyone can't make a go at freelancing. People who don't like their job shouldn't seek freelancing as an alternative. Many opportunities can happen faster on the internet then in a real world business but pay can be less, too. You will be force to take lower paying jobs until you have more experience and references. Furthermore, it's your decision to make about choosing to become a freelancer but make choices. Also, it would be wise to make realistic goals and do the research.
