Is Gametap.Com A Good Place to Buy Computer Games?

A Detailed Review of Gametap's Download to Own Store

Robert Caldwell
Gametap is well known for its monthly subscription service that allows players to play an unlimited number of games for a flat monthly price. Games are generally a bit older but still popular. This model has worked quite well for the site and its membership has grown substantially.

Gametap has started making a push into the more crowded arena of allowing users to purchase games and download them to their computers. This portion of gametap is not associated with the subscription option. When players purchase the game they own it just like if they went to a store a bought the physical version of the game.

The download to own portion of the site is still relatively new and the layout is proof of this. Finding titles you want can be hard to locate. Also gametap uses a slightly different way of sending product keys out. Most digital download sites have all of this information directly on the website in your account area. In some cases Gametap sends the product key to your e-mail instead. This creates the extra step of opening up your e-mail to get the product key. I also have had trouble even receiving this e-mail and have had to e-mail customer support to get the key.

Pricing is where gametap has won me back a couple of times. Generally different websites will off a small $5.00 off pre-orders or some other small price decrease for popular new releases. Gametap will generally offer $10.00 to $20.00 off new releases a month or two after they are released. I am generally willing to deal with a poor interface to save that kind of money.

As I mentioned before I have had to contact gametap customer support a couple of times to get issues resolved with getting product keys. This is where gametap really shines. They have resolved my issues generally within a couple of business hours. They only work Monday through Friday but response times within business hours is great.

Overall gametap is still a newcomer to digital downloads and it really shows. The interface is a pain but they make up for it with good sales and good customer support. I would recommend them if you are willing to deal with little problems here and there.
