Is This Generation Becoming Less Social Because of Technology?

Jerry
Often lately, I hear people bringing up the fact that my generation is becoming less and less social and are relying more and more on technology like computers and cell phones/texting as a means of communication. As true as this is, this does not necessarily mean that I am becoming less social.

If you look at the people who typically say this, it's usually going to be older people or those from a different generation; those who don't understand that what we're doing through these devices is actually the same concept as socializing in person. There are multiple categories that these people like to target for wrongful technological uses/advances.

Games
This is definitely one of my favorite ones. There definitely are those people who sit around and play games online all day. However, playing games online is definitely a source of socialization. Of course it's not quite the same as meeting face to face with someone you actually know, but isn't this actually a reliable way to meet new people in a safe environment?

Also, I would like to say that often times, the reason we play video games is to play them with friends, socialize, and meet new people while playing. We don't play these games just to sit around all day long and avoid any contact with the outside social

Cell Phones / Texting
These devices are definitely taking a hit when it comes to people down-talking on technology and its social corruption. Cellular phones are not a social problem! These are simply devices that allow us to communicate more simply! Anyone who thinks that the use of cellular phones, or text messaging is ruining social skills because it lacks face to face contact is insane, because these devices actually tend to make us more social human beings. Have some common sense!

Computers, Instant Messaging, Social Networking
Of course there are those who over-use all three of these, as there are people who overuse just about anything out there, but these are not a social corruption. Social networking websites and instant messaging allow us to keep in touch with our families, friends, and meet new people through the use of our computers. Of course it keeps us from making face to face contact immediately, but how many people are actually going to go out and look for new people to talk to anyways? The chat interface simply makes it more simple for people to break barriers and get to know new people in a more comfortable environment.
