Is Gitmo Really Closing?

Ronnie Manns
Could it be true, could Gitmo finally be closed? When President Obama first spoke about closing Gitmo many applauded. There were even some on the other side of the aisle that were for the closing of Gitmo. Still we hear the same ole lip-service that we have heard since this man was elected. The same people who are not even trying to help govern this nation. I find it hard to understand how those who now voice their opposition to this president were not doing the same when the past president mentioned the very same thing. Where were they when that was going on? It's like they just woke up from a long winter nap.

In case some of you were not paying attention, Gitmo is a poster child for terrorist recruitment only because of what happened before this president was elected. It has to be closed because of what it has come to represent. It has come to represent a black eye to this nation because we tortured and imprisoned people there for unjustified reasons. There many be still people housed there that did not commit a crime but because they have been there so long and by now really does have a real hatred for this country, they may not be able to be released. How easy is it to proclaim what should happen to others and justify the actions of others until those same actions happens to us or someone we know. Then and only then does it appear to be unfair.

With the new Gitmo in Illinois, we already know that it will be run by the Department of Defense and not the regular prison system. We know that prisons ran by DOD personnel only allow visits from the prisoner's lawyer, so the lie about terrorist coming into Chicago O'Hare to visit is untrue. Image Bin Laden risking his life trying to visit those in Illinois by boarding a plane to O'Hare. All visits will be video taped and recorded while all incoming and outgoing mail will be opened and searched. There has never been an escape from a maximum security prison and to be honest would that be a smart move for any of them to escape and expose themselves to being discovered by US citizens. I think bringing much needed jobs to a state with 11 percent unemployment is a good thing and what if by closing Gitmo, you now can make better in roads to opening up Cuba for our imports.
