Is "Glee" Trying to Push the Envelope of Its TV-14 Rating and Family Hour Timeslot?
"Glee" Season 2 Proving to Be Edgier (and Racier?) Than Season 1
"Glee" Season One as Edgy as it Gets?
In May 2010, "Glee" co-creator Brad Falchuk advised the Associated Press, the show would not get edgier, that in fact, "That hot tub [ejaculation] scene, and the Madonna episode - that's as edgy as it's gonna get." With less than eight episodes into the season, some parents and gleeks may beg to differ:
- Already a new student was borderline bullied by a member of New Directions and sent to a crack house instead of the rehearsal room for her audition.
- Santana and Brittany took their suggestive finger locking to the next level with an all-out make-out session on a bed.
- Santana worming her way into a dentist visit so she can get high on Nitrous Oxide.
- Finn finds a false sense of Christianity when a section of his grilled cheese sandwich is toasted into an image resembling Jesus. Which he aptly called "grilled cheesus", and loses faith in it as quickly as it came when his prayers did not always have the best outcome.
- Ironically, Rachel and Finn sing a duet about romantic love wearing a nun outfit and a priest costume and the performance is labeled offensive.
- Let's not forget the Brittany Spears episode where Mr. Shuester gyrated on students during a performance of Spears' 'Toxic' that led to a sex riot after the nerdy (Rachel-obsessed)blogger gyrates and grabs a male student's butt (by mistake) during an orgasmic frenzy.
"Glee" Creators May Be Testing the Limits of Their TV-14 and Family Hour Timeslot
Some may argue that Falchuk and co-creator Ryan Murphy are trying to see how far they can take the edge with the series. A discussion within the Fox owned "Glee" community is already questioning and comparing the edginess of both seasons. Even radio shock jock Howard Stern has called the show "pervy." That does make one pause when Stern calls something out for being perverted.
However, recent actions by certain 'Glee" cast members may be affecting the perception of an increased edginess to the show. In October, Cory Monteith, Leah Michel and Diana Agron posed in what is considered a racy photo shoot for the November issue of GQ Magazine. While Monteith's images were pretty tamed, Agron looked to be the "Glee" Lolita and Michel looked to be the promiscuous tart clad mostly in her panties. Agron has since issued an apology for having offended any fans.
What's Edgier "Glee" or Real Teenage Life?
With outside antics aside, is "Glee" anymore edgier or racier than high school? Teenage pregnancy (the result of teenagers having sex), which was previously on a decline, is rising again according to analysis performed by the Guttmacher Institute. Bullying is still rampant amongst teenagers, with dire results that can lead to death. More and more homosexual teenagers are coming out and are chastised for it with such antics as being duped into going to a fake prom.
So if these situations are occurring amongst teenagers is "Glee" truly being edgy or is it art imitating teenage life... but with a cool soundtrack?

Post a CommentI wasn't impressed with the very first episode which seemed obnoxious enough, and have never watched since.
It does seem to push the envelope hard sometimes.
Interesting. I've only seen Glee a few times, but I bet real teen life is far more racy.
Great article! =0)
