Is God Relevant in Todays Society

I think the relevance of God in today's world is even more necessary and important than ever before. The further human beings are moving away from God the more problems they are getting themselves into. It is as if they are children who are growing up without the physical presence of a parent and in the process do not know where to draw the lines as far as their behaviour, ethics or morality is concerned. The actions and greed of people who have been put in power, either through elections or through self appointment are helping to lead the world towards disaster by domination and aggravations motivated by wealth, animosity or power or all three.

When you look around at the world today there is no "safe" zone left any more. We are afraid to let our children out to play alone, travelling is unsafe because of attacks or kidnappings, racially motivated hatred is rife, religious intolerance is widespread and children of modern age are the most "grown up" as far as sexuality and outspokenness is concerned. In addition we are seeing women as young as 11 becoming mothers with illegitimacy are at its most widespread.

Looking at all these aspects we are going to face a society in the near future in which humans are going to be at their most cynical, immoral and either obsessed with materialism or with the desire to staying younger for as long as possible. The trends are already in place and with cosmetic procedures available for the young and the old freely it is a matter of fighting the race against time and achieving eternal youth. And as far as money is concerned, we all know the evil and greed of credit and how it is bringing about the downfall in our society as we watch.

We hear of child abuse and child killings by parents themselves who are committing all sorts of crimes against their own children and not a single day goes by when you do not hear of drug related or drink related crimes. It could be because we have minute by minute media reports available from around the globe that make us aware of what the world is getting up to, something that we could not get easy access to years ago when crimes lay hidden without much media attention. And then again, maybe human beings have always had this destructive side to their natures which was evident going by the two world wars, the holocaust and the great depression that our world has already witnessed.

But it has never been as worldwide as it is now. Human beings need to be redirected back to what is good, what is moral and what is right for themselves, towards other people and towards the environmental well being of our planet. For this we have to go back to finding our spiritual paths again and learning how to be humble and accountable for all our actions.

With information so easily available to our society it is time to start studying the books that were revealed to us as guides on how we should live as human beings. Every intelligent device comes with a manual and we are no different. For our spiritual and moral behaviour we have to follow the principles that have not changed over time. We might have fast cars or aeroplanes and we might be very IT literate or financially astute but deep down we are made up of the most basic of feelings.

We want to be loved, looked after and respected. We like good behaviour and we hate being lied to and being stolen from. We do not like being cheated on and we do not like the feelings of jealousy and anger and killing one another is definitely not on our agenda. Wherever we live in the world we have an inborn instinct towards following these basic rules. They make society responsible and safe for us and our future generations. So that brings us back to what God gave to Moses all those years ago....the Ten Commandments. What God knew then as principles for mankind to follow are as apt and applicable now for the modern man as they were then for the civilisations of old.

We have to bring the fear back into ourselves and remember that our actions have repercussions and we will have to answer for what we do and how we behave. We are accountable to someone and that someone is God who made us. It is time we realised this and started remembering Him again and bringing Him back into our lives and our children's lives. If we do not do that we might as well be creatures who have been let loose on this earth without meaning and reason and we will end up destroying ourselves and this planet like some sort of parasites who multiply and eat the host in the process.

Those who believe in God read their holy books and there are warnings and stories about people from previous nations who were destroyed because of how they behaved towards each other and through their immoral and inhuman actions which caused their civilisations to be destroyed

In the Koran in Sura Al Anam (6) it says, "See they not how many of those before them we did destroy? - generations We had established on the earth, in strength such as We have not given to you - for whom We poured out rain from the skies in abundance, and gave (fertile) streams flowing beneath their (feet): yet for their sins We destroyed them, and raised in their wake fresh generations (to succeed them)"

Let us hope and pray we are not one of those generations destroyed for ever with only our remains left behind as evidence that we ever existed.

Well-written article, and so true. I believe that society's shunning of God has brought about so many of the things we are seeing in the world today. In short, we reap what we sow.
