Is it a Good Idea to Have a Pet Barracuda?

Shannon Frye
If you are thinking about purchasing a barracuda there are a few things that you need to take into consideration. These fish are carnivores which means that they eat live fish. If you don't feel comfortable feeding your fish live fish you will probably not want to purchase a barracuda. These fish will also get fairly large so you will need a tank which can house a barracuda. Some barracudas are seen together in groups in the wild. It's unknown whether or not barracudas will hurt each other in a freshwater fish tank.

You will need to keep the temperature at the correct level for the fish. You will want to know what the temperature is inside the tank you are purchasing the fish from. If the tank doesn't have any decorations or plants you will want to reconsider. In the wild, barracudas live amongst plants. If the tank doesn't have any decor or plants for the fish to hide, the fish will begin to get stressed out. If your fish is stressed out it's going to probably get sick.

You never want to purchase a sick fish from a pet store. You will want to keep an eye out for white spots as well as torn fins and cuts. You do not want to purchase a fish which is showing signs of illness such as fast breathing. You want to purchase an active fish. If the fish is just sitting at the bottom of the fish tank you will probably want to purcahse a barracuda from another pet store. If you purchase the fish and it dies there will probably be some type of return policy but you will probably need to bring the fish back in.

You will need to purchase fish for the fish to eat. You will need to buy either minnows or feeder goldfish. You can purchase feeder goldfish from the pet store and you can purchase minnows from a bait shop. The best choice is going to be minnows because they are usually not sick like feeder goldfish are. Most minnows will not get sick. Most feeder fish will have ich and fin rot. This will get your fish sick if your fish eats the sick fish. You will then have to treat your fish and hope that it will pull through the illness.
