Is Greg Paulus the Future Quarterback of the Michigan Wolverines?
A Look at Greg Paulus' Possible Transfer to Michigan Football
Last season, the Michigan Wolverines had two starters at the quarterback position that seemed to rotate in and out, depending on who was injured or ineffective. Steven Threet, the main starting quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines, ended up transferring out after a dismal season.
Greg Paulus was a standout football recruit in high school, but elected to play basketball at Duke University, one of the nation's most storied basketball programs. Under Coach K, Paulus was able to run the floor for the Blue Devils as a starter, before being relegated to the bench later on in his career. After a four year run at the school, it is fairly surprising to see that he wants to get back into football.
If this news is indeed true, and Paulus ends up transferring to Michigan to play quarterback, then this will have a significant impact on a lot of people. First, top recruits Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson may be forced to sit, depending on if Paulus can take the starting job (he does have super-senior status). Forcier and Robinson were expected to duke it out for the starting job in 2009 (no pun intended).
Also, if Paulus can step in immediately and prove to be a big force (that is not a lock), then Michigan will have a threat at the quarterback position that they have never had before. This could be real trouble for any Big Ten opponent, even Ohio State. Michigan does not have a complete team, but shoring up the quarterback position would be a huge step for a program coming off a miserable season.
With all of the transfers that Michigan has experienced, getting a player that could potentially turn out to be an immediate solid starter is not too bad at all. Rich Rod, who desperately needs to bring in players to fit his spread offense, may also buy himself a little more time with the critical Michigan alum, who don't like to see their team lose. All in all, if Paulus transfers to Michigan, it could cause a big ripple effect in many ways throughout the Michigan football program and the Big Ten.
