Is Haiku for You?

How Do You Write a Haiku Poem? Read, and See

Linda Ann Nickerson
.
Here is a haiku.

Just seventeen syllables.

That is all it takes.

.

Japanese poems -

Seriously, there's much more

To haiku than that.

.

Poetic art forms

Should contain life truths or views,

Stirring readers' hearts.

.

Second-grade haikus

Are cute and even playful.

What about adults?

.

Can we reach for more?

Can we evoke emotion?

Can we raise the bar?

.

Sometimes, simple things

May hold the most complex truths.

Haiku poems do.

.

Author's Note:

These six stanzas all adhere to the haiku format. In each stanza, the first and third lines contain five syllables, and the second line contains seven.

However, simply to prove an editorial point, the direct approach and satirical overtones are starkly contrasted to pure haiku poetry. The purest haiku poetry contains evocative imagery, expressed in artistic simplicity.

Like Japanese painting, with its dramatic contrasting primary colors and starkly simple lines, the most skilled crafters of haiku employ a severe economy of wording. This may jar the reader somewhat, even as it rhythmically draws him in.

Technically, a senryu is more likely to be satirical, while haiku tends to be more empirical. Neither, of course, is actually lyrical. (See, I had to rhyme somewhere!)

Intresting thought----never thought of a haiku being satirical-----will have to try a new angle to my poems.
