Is Hannah Montana the Right Role Model for Your Child?

Who is Hannah Montana and is she a good role model for your little girl? In today's day and age it seems that all of these so called "role models" are failing miserably at their job. With so many celebrities having scandal after scandal, and seemingly relishing in the publicity they receive good or bad, who can these young girls look up to? Their parents should be an obvious choice but for most pre-teens and teens that idea of your mother being who you fashion your clothing and music choices after may be too scary of a thought. Hannah Montana is one of today's great role models for kids, especially girls.

The Show

Fourteen year old Mylie Cyrus, daughter of country singer and actor Billie Ray Cyrus (yes the Achy Breaky Heart guy) has her own television show on the Disney Channel named Hannah Montana. Mylie Cyrus plays an average girl who leads an exciting double life. For most days she's just plain old Mylie Stewart an awkward high school freshman living though everyday trouble like being unpopular and bullies. But what only her family and a few close friends know is that Mylie Stewart is also Hannah Montana, international signing sensation.

This show is saccharine sweet which is just what young girls love. Mylie Stewart/Hannah Montana and her friends talk about boys, love, and clothing but do so without making anything sexual or inappropriate for preteens or teenagers. Stewart/Montana wear some strange and some stylish clothes but they are never provocative or inappropriate (try saying that about the Bratz dolls). Even in full blown Hannah Montana mode the character is always fully clothed, meaning there are no flashes of belly buttons from cropped tops and not once is her bottom exposed by wearing pants that are slung just a little too low. In a world of young girls trying their best to look like young women, Hannah Montana is like a blast of fresh air, wearing fashionable clothes but still looking like the young teen she is. You can feel safe letting your child watch Hannah Montana

The Music

Mylie Cyrus does the actual singing for the Hannah Montana character and she not half bad. She has a much better voice than Britney Spears did at her age. Montana's songs are pop at its very best. There are no inappropriate lyrics and some of the tunes are quite catchy if you like that kind of music. Once again this is the type of music you can let your child listen to without any worries. If you've never heard any of her songs before check out radio Disney, her songs (along with High School Musical) are in heavy rotation. Two weeks ago tickets for Hannah Montana's first American concert went on sale. Forget the Police or a reunited Van Halen the most popular ticket to have this year is for the Hannah Montana concert. But alas if you didn't purchase your tickets within the first few minutes they went on sale then it doesn't look like your going to get one, not unless you want to pay a scalper between $4000-$1500 per ticket.

Merchandise

The Hannah Montana name is merchandised to the hilt. Of course this show is owned by Disney so would you expect anything else? Hannah Montana has a clothing line, a line of wigs, and dolls among others items. The clothing line is exceptionally cute. Once again it's fashionable and flashy with out being inappropriate for preteens or teenagers. You can feel okay when your child tells you she wants the new Hannah Montana t-shirt.

Scandals

Mylie Cyrus was recently hit with her first scandal. She was accused of being pregnant. Cyrus denied being pregnant and even went as far to say that she was waiting for marriage before that would even be a possibility. Other than this she has managed to not become embroiled in any scandals.

Mylie Cyrus seems to be a down to earth girl, who's very kind and loves life. She is a wonderful role model for preteens and teenagers. Never once has their been a picture of her coming out of a club inebriated and flashing her panties (Paris, Britney, Lindsey should probably take note). She dresses like a fourteen year old girl should and not like that of a 21 year old woman. Mylie Cyrus and her show Hannah Montana encourage young girls to be happy with who they are and to more importantly act their age. There should be more role model's like Mylie Cyrus/Hannah Montana out there, unfortunately it looks like she may be the only one.
