There are also many benefits to having an animal around, especially a dog. Not only is it true that dogs help with health benefits through walking and exercise with the dog, but there are many other benefits a dog can provide that you would never really even think of without research to back these facts up.
Evidently, most people with dogs only walk an average of 18 minutes longer per week than an average person without a dog present. So obviously, there are many other forces at work than just the fact that dogs provide a good source of walking entertainment.
In general, people with dogs tend to be more mentally and physically stronger people. However, the hard part about this study is whether or not these people were already in good shape mentally and physically before owning a dog, or whether these people became better somehow after the owning of a dog.
One German study actually set out to research this section of pet ownership. Over a course of 10,000 people whom have had dogs present for over 5 years, they make considerable less trips to the doctor.
It has been proven that spending just 10 minutes in the presence of a dog can lower your blood pressure, thus decreasing the amount of stress one is feeling. This is much more likely to reduce the problems with your heart and blood later on in life, thus increasing your life span.
Not only can dogs decrease the stress amounts on your body, but they're great for decreasing chances of allergies in children. Children who have a pet in their first year of life are much less likely to suffer from allergies or asthma problems. In other words, if you can introduce a child to pets at an early age, do so! The health benefits from animals are much greater than you would expect.
Dogs and pets in general are great to have around because they can help to eliminate some stress, are a great source of exercise, and have been clinically proven to make people stronger both psychologically and physiologically. If you're someone who has had an animal in your life for a long period of time, you're much more likely to experience the effects that they provide, and also much less likely to want to get rid of the animals.
