Is Heidi Really a "Hills" Villain?

Steve Buldini
Viewers of MTV's sensational twenty-something "reality" show have been waiting two seasons for a reconciliation between ex-bff's Heidi Montag and Lauren Conrad. The two have been at bitter odds ever since Heidi started shacking up with Spencer Pratt, who does not get along with Lauren to say the least. Spencer is condescending, patronizing, egotistical and basically a perfect villain in a show about Hollywood, with his greatest crime being the creation of a rift between the two close friends that were once roommates, "sisters' and inseparable. Heidi has been portrayed as the vivacious, venerable, vixen of the show, and her and Spencer are collectively referred by Hollywood as "Speidi". However, is Heidi really a villain or a victim?

Lauren and Heidi may at times play down their past friendship, possibly to dilute insecurities about their longing for a reconciliation. They were there for each other through some tough times; Lauren for Heidi during Heidi's breakup with Jordan, and Heidi for Lauren through her tough breakup with ex-love Jason. In fact, Heidi once selflessly left a New Year 's Eve party because Jason had "acted up" again and thrown one of his hissy fits, upsetting Lauren who had to leave the party. A best friend does things like Heidi used to for Lauren and I think Lauren took it for granted. All the good times were stopped cold in their tracks once Spencer came into Heidi's life. He controlled her friendships and took Lauren's best friend away. And when Heidi moved out from Lauren to live with Spencer, Lauren turned her back on her best friend. The drift really started to ensue when Spencer allegedly started a "sex tape" rumor about Lauren and her ex Jason. Lauren suspects Heidi knew about Spencer's allegations and did not turn her back against him, infuriating Lauren and thus starting the beginning of the end of their relationship. But is Heidi responsible for her boyfriend's actions? People fall in love and are clouded by judgment, much like Lauren was when Heidi was there for her during Lauren's tumultuous relationship with "bad boy" Jason, amidst all their meltdowns and Jason's ill-advised treatment of Lauren. Never once did Heidi turn her back on Lauren over Jason, even though Heidi knew Jason was not a positive influence in her life. Lauren, however, turned her back on Heidi when she started dating Spencer.

So, who really is the victim and why can't these two make up and go back to the better, more nostalgic times? More complications have abounded, with Spencer and Heidi's sisters both befriending Lauren. Lauren had a close relationship with Heidi's sister Holly and now has a close friendship with Spencer's sister Stephanie (She-Pratt), further alienating Lauren and Heidi's relationship. Spencer and Heidi have expressed their frustration with Holly and She-Pratt hanging out with Lauren (Spencer for the betrayal of his sister hanging with his enemy; Heidi for the fact that they can be friends with Lauren, but she can't and does not understand why.) and it does not appear that Heidi can make sense over the whole situation.

Time will tell if these two will make a reconciliation. Throughout all the press about how celebrity-obsessed Heidi is (I blame that on Spencer) and how "fake" she is and the show is, I truly believe there was a deep friendship at heart that both long for. Previews show Heidi reaching out yet again to Lauren, but with Heidi continuing to stay with He-Pratt, the reconciliation may never happen. But, one thing is for sure, Heidi is not a one-dimensional villain and may in fact be the biggest victim of the entire volatile, super-charged situation.
